-Innuendo Strudios on Smash Bros:
-For some reason, in the early 2000s everybody's brains hemmoraged at
the same time, and we all thought voice commands were a good idea. That
resulted in Nintendo trying the microphone thing twice. Once with "Hey
You Pikachu!" and again on the Gamecube. Also it gave us SOCOM: Navy
Seals and Lifeline.
"Hey You Pikachu" I rented, and remember
being super excited the first time it worked, because I was fucking 12
at the time. However, half the time it didn't work, and it was
ridiculous to control. Apparently it was calibrated to higher pitched
voices. The only other game that used the microphone accesory was a
train simulator.
The two Gamecube games, "Mario Party 7" and "Odama" were in
Nintendo's HOLY FUCK WE'RE DESPERATE Era before the Wii made a shitton
of money. "Odama" was created by the same guy who did Seaman, which
makes total sense. You were to direct a group of soldiers out of the way
of a giant pinball it seemed to get middling reviews, and impressed
people. Mario Party 7 is a Mario Party game later than 4.
Then came Lifeline and SOCOM. Both at least tried, but the latter
pushed the multiplayer and the headset more than the voice commands. I
think you could get extra information about your mission via the headset, but that's all.
-DANNY DEVITO PIKACHU WOULD BE THE BEST THING EVER!
Though lets face it, Nintendo will hire someone who can do a good
Danny Devito Impression, and make no references to It's Always Sunny In

-Actually, the intended purpose of the car conversations in Deadly Premonition is to connect you, the player to the world of the game to its world, and make you think aboutthe game when you're not playing it.
-Everything new I hear about Quiet in MGSV makes Quiet's outfit the

Bowie-ness and made that shit concrete:
-Harmonix does have Rock Band 4 on Fig.
Currently it's tracking to succeed, with 25 days to go 25% of the way
there. I think I speak for the group that we're all excited about it,

Paolo's also got the right idea, archiving everything from the old
system. In downtime, I've been working on the rest of the Dino Hunter
MD: The Sound Track album for RBN.
It's not too tough to implements the same requirements for the RBN
(Peer Review/Demo Phases/Etc), but because of how the Steam Workshop
works, the profits would go to the user. Meaning that there is
significatly less Peer Review and the system would be way easier to
game.

Another episode where we're out of our comfort zones with Ray playing a aggro goat demigod Landris to his trickster water god Zun Quib Slay, and me playing Explorer for the Future Fillion to my smashy-smashy War God Kindunos.
While it's not quite the finale, we did set up a REALLY good final chapter, and some groundwork is laid for Fillion to a perfectly politicking asshole.

I'm fucking glad OK Go is doing these music videos. Back in the early
days of MTV, the first people to make videos were art students and
people who wanted to make weird shit, and they were the one of the first
ones on YouTube to go "FUCK YEAH! EAT OUR CONCEPTS, NEEERRRRRRDS!"
-Rock Band 2 Update brought us A LOT of good music, like "Ace Of
Spades" (the '08 rerecord where he says "But no one wants to live for
ever/but apparently I am), "Alex Chilton", "Alive", "Bad Reputation",
"Chop Suey", "Come Out And Play", "Down With The Sickness",
"Everlong"... that's only up to E. Rock Band 2's soundtrack was probably
my favorite out of the lot.
It was right at that confluence of "We haven't completely mined
everything yet" and "We have a shitton of money and promotion behind
us".
However, I think it's the soundtrack I got sick of the soonest. Like
GH3, it was the peak of it's popularity, the setlist was the most played
and there were setups EVERYWHERE. Especially "Livin' on a Prayer" and
"Anyway You Want It", two of the biggest singalong songs ever. I think
the only thing RB4 is missing now is Lego Rock Band and AC/DC, the
former I regret getting on.

-The notion of a "Console Wars" I believe has subsided in the past
few years, primarily because everything has gotten so expensive, all the
games come out for pretty much everything. In response to that, the PC
Master Race comes out of the ashes, and the focus shifts between not who
has the better platform, but who plays their games in the best way.
The term comes from an old Zero Punctuation Review of The Witcher
(the first one), where Yahtzee states that the nature of the game's
PC-Only Nature meant it had to be very difficult and complicated.
What started as an ironic joke turned into a symbol of pride. "Look
at these snobbish assholes" became "LOOK, WE'RE SNOBBISH ASSHOLES!".
It's like if rich people introduced themselves with "As A Fat Cat
1%er..."
Also PCs are more expensive than consoles. Whereas the CONSOLE WAR
mentality was usually because you could only buy the one, PC mentality
is like "I spent more on this, why isn't this the best? I need 60 FPS!"

I was in the right age to get absolutely overwhelmed by the Pokemon
Machine as a kid, and this ad is peak "Sure, whatever kid, had a big ol'
adventure for yourself!" and presents a world where people can have
Pikachus for pets.
Now I want The Miz to play Giovanni in a live action Pokemon thing.
-The name of Demetri Martin's show was "Important Things With Demetri Martin". It
was all right, considering how often Comedy Central gives standup comics
a sketch show for a couple years then cancels it.
-Mystakin is one of the Authors under the Rhythm Authors banner, who Harmonix has been outsourcing some authoring work to.
Not necessarily a surprise, since Harmonix is independent studio and
has a fraction of the manpower they used to have, so reaching out to
experienced Rock Band Authors is a completely acceptable course of
action.
Rhythm Authors did a lot of songs for the Rock Band Network for some
very popular metal bands, such as A Day To Remember, Between The Buried
and Me and Five Finger Death Punch.

hard separation between fast and slow is jarring, but I take it this
won the Grammy because the Pianist, Christian Sands is able to keep up

possibly because the way Christian McBride plays bass is like a normal
guitarist busting out a solo. If this were an octave higher it would fit
right into a metal song. That guy's fingers must be swole as fuck.
What I'm saying is that it's a good song. Not one I'd have on my MP3
while I'm pumping iron in the gym, but one I enjoyed listening to
writing this recap.
-Nuclear Throne is the best class of
roguelike, because the "run" is as simple as pulling the lever on a slot
machine. Same with FTL, where a run doesn't require a major time
commitment, and if you lose, you're only out an hour at most.

-So, in Magic the Gathering, there are 5 colors, each with it's own
strengths and weaknesses. I'll summarize as quickly as possible: WHITE- Usually white spells are about keeping you and your creatures alive for as long as possible. BLUE-
Usually blue spells are about playing the game on your own terms, doing
things such as making creatures weaker, or countering your opponent's
spells. BLACK- Black spells involve death of some sort, usually
either killing creatures, or interacting with your discard pile (aka
"Graveyard") RED- Red spells are about speed and direct damage, like
"Deal X damage to target creature or player" and creatures that can
attack very early on in the game. GREEN- Green spells are about big
creatures and lands, so you can make lands big creatures or get more
lands to get to your big creatures sooner.
Around the mid-2000s, Magic made characters called "Planeswalkers" that act as an embodiment of each color.

who Jeff talked about is the blue mage, and he's the most popular
probably because A. He looks the most like what we think of a "Wizard"
and B. He's moody and brooding and all the anti-hero types in what is
basically a scrawny scene kid: Every bit of lore he's involved in goes as such: Someone tricks him, then he gets tortured, then he Protagonists his way to victory.
Garruk was the Green Planeswalker for a while, until the Innstrad block when he'd been cursed with a magic artifact. Origianlly he was going to use his magic to be a farmer, then local army wanted him, but him and his Dad were all like, "Nah, fuck that noise" and the Army killed his Dad. He then spent the next 10 years suplexing progressively larger beasts, then eating them.
Chandra is the Red Planeswalker. Guess what her magic preference is?
I agree with Jeff that her "Origin Story" is the best. She was raised on Steampunk India (Kaladesh) where her parents were Engineers but she was like "I'm gonna be King Of The Outlaws!" which is a coincidence because her parents were also working for a rebel alliance because the government was basically Reaganomics and was like "THE AETHER WILL TRICKLE DOWN!".
So when she was delivering some Aether the royal guard caught her, but she fought them off with her newly discovered fire magic. Her parents were like "That was cool and all, and we love you baby, but we need to GTFO".
They fled to a village, then the Royal Guard caught up with them and was like "Gorbachev, burn down this village. Chandra was to be excecuted in an arena, where at the last second she planeswalked away.

-The section where Jeff talks about Punch Club I have under a sub-heard in my notes called "FUCKING BUBBLES" after the Nostalgia Critic gag.
However, I feel like the "Bubbles" thing in these types of games is simply the result of the "Best Thing" being the standard.
Here's some bullshit I came up with. Not Grade-A Star Fox/G-Diffuser Bullshit. But close:
1. Designers need a visual way to show that progress is happening. An object heading toward a meter is a good way to show that things are proceeding upward, while not relying on the player squinting at a progress bar. In the case of Game Dev Tycoon, these bubbles tick up a counter. In Punch Club, they go toward your fighters attributes, showing A. That stat is increasing, B. The activity increase that stat and C. How long that activity will remain effective in increasing that stat.
2. Bubbles are "friendly". Round shapes don't have corners, meaning they're non-threatening. Imagine a triangle or a square denoting your progress. Feels off, doesn't it? To me, at least, squares are too drab and boring to be engaging, and look way too much like a regular-ass loading screen. Triangles can be a little confusing, but might be effective. For example.

-Fray Tormenta was a priest who ran an orphanage for over 23 years, supporting it by participating in lucha libre. Eagle FightsBro and Water Loki continue to raise their children Literal Goat Daniel Bryan and Not Malcolm Reynolds. The campaign is lead by a Entertained Yet Confused Ryan.
Our god pals do this by referencing City Slickers by having the pampered city boy learn the ways of country folk, thereby gaining their respect, Naruto, by- Fuck it, I know Naruto is the best example (or at least the first one I found via Google), but we're going to say Rocky 4, since while no cliff faces are climbed perse, he still goes up in elevation on a structure than can be called a mountain.
Where were we? Right. We also do this by referencing Rocky IV where a man climbs a mountain and learns to punch Communism in its face, and by referencing every movie where a White Person uses The Art of Dance to make Minorities Believe In Themselves. Only instead of minorities, it's People Who Need A New Job and instead of Dance its Wisdom.
It kinda sucks there's only two player characters, but this is another one of those episodes, where it shows how me and Raymond's characters, and how we play and approach RPGs can differ and yet work together at the same time. So really, it's probably better that there's only two players, especially given the "parenting" subtheme (mother/father, brains/brawn, pragmatic/dramatic, etc.)

Then I remembered watching a video on Asshole Simulators and I was

-UpUpDwnDwn is Xavier Woods' videogame YouTube Channel, and it's a
really interesting watch. He/Austin Creed's not the best Let's Player,
but I love watching him play with other Superstars, watching them break
Kayfabe and have fun together. It's mainly the reason I want to see
Heath Slater and Damien Sandow on TV again.
However what I'm looking forward is a reignition of his rivalry with Dirty Dan Ryckert Giant Bomb at PAXAMANIA:
-Rock Band's Soundtrack has MAYBE two main setlist songs completely
unrecognizable at first glance(Those most likely being "Electric
Version" AND "Dead On Arrival") . Chances are, someone from some
generation will recognize something, and songs like "Are You Gonna Be My
Girl?" and "Here It Goes Again" are still fresh in people's minds from
various advertisements, there's plenty of songs people ask for by name.
As the games wore on, the setlists opted for less recognizable hits but
bigger bands (U2? VAN HALEN?)
-The Simpsons and Family Guy are shambling forms of their old selves,
and the ways in which they attempt to innovate are more patheric as
time goes on. The Simpsons look to cash in on the latest pop culture
craze after animators spend 9 months working on it, and everything seems
to be retreading old ground. I need to wartch it again, but looking at
the Wiki page, they seem to have eased off the Celebrity of the Week
Episodes.

Hey, look! The Gods of Fortitude actually managed to be parents this time! So we have the second half of the "Not Fucking Up A Child" montage next week, but this week we partake in my favorite trope: Kindunos and Zun Quib Slay working with each other by working against each other.

-I haven't played much of Amplitude, but the idea of a video game as a concept album is pretty awesome, the only problem being
longevity. Thankfully the other songs round out the soundtrack a bit
more, but even those are hit or miss (LOOKING AT YOU CRAZY RIDE) and are
only unlocked after repeated plays.
-The most creepiest thing about GH LIve (other than HOW EVERYONE IS
LOOKING AT YOU) are the signs in the audience: "YOU GUYS ARE COOL" "YOU
GIFT MY EARS" "BEACH PARTY" Seriously? Were these songs written by 5
year olds who only heard what a rock concert is?
As a former extra, I can only imagine how difficult all that must
have been to put together since crowds that large are like herding cats
(source: Extra shoot for the movie New Year's Day).
If they ever make more venues like that, I'd like to see them play
around with the concept: Pointing at the player when a lyric has the
word "You!" seeing the camera shake because you got smacked in the back
of the head, the bassist motioning to the sound guy to cut your sound,
etc.
-Animorphs was the fucking shit back in the day. I read all the books
I could and even watched the TV series. And Mystakin, like the fucking
dumb idiot he is, (or the game is), got the premise all wrong:
So 5 kids discover an ancient alien artifact from a species known as
the Andelites that allows them to transform into any animal they touch
(for a maximum period of 2 hours). They use this power to combat the
Yeerk, a brain parasite alien species that's pretty much the books
version of Toxoplasma, where the host are compelled to feed and recharge
(I forget the specifics) the parasites.
-Speedrun Couple is getting their own stage play/musical called
"Rushing To The End" or possibly "Backuyp Strats for Your Relationship".
Also it's a strong contender for "Segment I'd Animate If I Remembered
ANYTHING From Flash.
-Resident Evil would NEVER get made as a AAA title these days. A
spooky mansion with limited saves and obtuse puzzle sounds like
something straight out of the ever increasing indie market. It's a
surprise that more horror games try and follow in the original RE's
footsteps as opposed to the first person games like Slender.
As dumb as it is now, I would love to try and figure out some batshit
crazy chemical mixing puzzle to kill an overgrown plant, or find the
various Chess Keys or whatever.
If there's any other game that follows in RE's footsteps (puzzlewise, not horror wise) let me know!
SLAYERS OF DECADENCE EPISODE 6
I don't do these as indepth as the Echo Chamber, since there is story involved and I don't want to spoil it.
Yeah, so the main thing I forget is that we're Gods and we can pretty much do whatever. Like, we can be invisible and show up out of nowhere or hide forever. We can move shit around behind the scenes and if anyone thinks we're a ghost or gets suspicious, it doesnt matter because A. Ghosts aren't real and B. We're gods and they can't do shit.
But even as an all powerful diety I'm still an awkward dork.
Also this was another fun episode since we do some problem solving, have some fun fate shenanigans, and Kindunos gets to punch shit. Like, we started a communist revolution by making Galt's Gulch.
Kidding aside, we've been getting into some deep shit in this campaign. Like, how to raise children, how to build a community, what values we think are important, etc.
Maybe the real God-like power is that we have it within ourselves take control of our own world.
Tabletop Campaigns are usually at their best when the PCs are royally fucking everything up, like accidentally blowing up the earth, but that other shit is fine too I guess.

We staple on baby traits like it's some kind of RPG. Granted, it's more abstract like "gifted orator", "dedication to one's city", etc. We're really not going to fuck up our messiah baby.

Keeping their glam cred by doing a song about the most glam holiday. Justin Hawkins's voice really shines, and the guitar work, while relatively straightforward, is broken up by some nice riffs.

Eh, not sure I agree, since how can one define aestehtic? After all the ho-hum decorations for this past year's PPVs, I liked how Wrestlemania Play Button looked: outdoors, big wide stage, and the matches becoming more important and dramatic as night falls.

I spent my Christmas Eve watching matches between these two and

In this one, some riff-raff ascends to Kindunos's Outpost of the True Warrior and he needs to decide if allow ruffians to innovate on our honed fighting style, and Zun-Quib-Slay fucks some more people and has more babies.
Then at the end is this incredible scene where we fight off a siege army using cunning, guile, FATE-level bullshitting and ZQS getting his freak on. There was a meme on Tumblr that I'm not going to look up right now, that lists how to do a simple task in each of the main tabletop RPG systems, and FATE's was "How well can you bullshit to the GM that you can do it?"
Also, Raymond of this podcast is an experienced roleplayer, so I couldn't have picked two better people (that I don't know IRL) to run this campaign with. Or at least the core two. There WERE supposed to be other people involved but they don't show up that often.
Like any podcast, the number of people change the dynamic entirely. For example, any Echo Chamber Podcast on it IMMEDIATELY goes to shit once we hit 6 people. And by shit, I mean awesome.
So, I wasn't able to attend this session, but it's been a delight to listen to. They take my Dad joke to the next logical step, and teach shepherds to weaponize fire.
Meant to post this earlier, but I didn't have internet... Episode 2 of the Fate Accelerated game I've been playing with the people from Insert Quest Here and Rag Nerd Rok.
A couple years ago I was part of a DnD group with some friends and it was fun, but then once I played a game of Eclipse Phase with Ryan, I had to get good at improv and role playing, and it's a weird space to get into, especially when there's so much riding on the face that dice rolls need to come out a certain way, but then again, that's where Rag-Nerd-Rok showed me some next level GMing. A good GM will let you fail. A good GM has a plan for if and when you fail. A good GM will not let you fail.
It's midnight Sunday when I wrote this so I have content for the rest of the week, but you get my drift.
The FATE system has a lot of back and forth to it, and makes for a cinematic style of play, where you have to occupy this odd headspace between what your character would do and what you would do as a third party watching it on a movie screen like so many horror movie buffs yelling "Don't go in there!".
So, question, when Part 2 comes up, should it be its own thing, or should I lump it in with the podcast recaps?
