Yeah, so for future reference, anytime I do something new, I'm going to make a quick post about it.
NEW SINGLE! "I Want To Fuck Krampus For Christmas"
A song about love on Christmas. Krampus is the new hotness on the holiday season, baby! I was going to do this on the guitar, but when I got into Reaper, and played around with the synth, it sounded REALLY GOOD!
NEW VIDEO! "The Average Rhythm Bastard Live Experience 3(KB) (Anime Iwai)"
Part of my "Resolutions" for 2020 is to make a proper Sizzle Reel for my live shows to show off to potential cons and venues, but this had so many good moments and was such a good feeling to have all my friends from 3000 Brigade support me!
The City of Waterdeep has seen bands with grudges before, but has it seen one with a grudge that is out for revenge against a friend slash teammate? Also, Nivenya goes into a hole.
Our cleric gets very pupset, and Oi is a jerk to robots.
Otakufest!
OtakuFest is a two-day festival that celebrates anime, manga, cosplay, gaming, comics, and more. You can dress up as your favorite character or come as you are, we aim to be a very inclusive convention. OtakuFest is new to South Florida’s convention scene, but its creator/show-runner Winji Mesadieu has been a part of Supercon as well as the South Florida convention community for over a decade. OtakuFest expects to bring in 4,000 people over 2 days for its first show in 2019. OtakuFest will feature activities and celebrities from the realm of comics, anime, animation, cosplay, manga, comics, gaming, and more!
It's also the day before Labor Day, so you can guarantee I'm getting all Socialist-y at this show. And you can get shitfaced and not have to worry about work the next day.
I did get word back on one OTHER new con, but I'm waiting for an announcement on them first...
SPEAKING OF NEW CONS...
MINI IWAI! Mini Iwai was a blast as always, and the show was fun to put on. However, my two favorite events of the day were the ones where I didn't play.
First up was "Cosplay Relay". which is a good concept that needed refining, and will be one to watch when Iwai: Rush comes around in a couple months. Basically, two teams of three work together to make a cosplay for a "model" (which I was) using a bunch of supplies provided for them. The catch is, every member is only given 10 minutes and can not communicate with each other. It's got potential, but it seemed like everyone only had a 80% grasp of the concept, so it needs ironing out.
Then came the 3000 Brigade Preview Show, which was just great.
As opposed to a preview show where our TOTALLY REAL BOY BAND B12 performed, it was Match Game where everyone was different charachters. We've done this before at other shows, and this time I was Tenya Iida from My Hero Academia because I spent $50 on a UA Gym Uniform AND GODDAMN IT I WAS GOING TO USE IT AGAIN.
Also turned out to be really popular. Huh.
MEGAPLEX AND AFO!
Same weekend, that started with Car Troubles: namely my car overheating a couple times and a hole in my tire. So I had to drive 50 miles on my spare, then wake up at 8 AM to get a new one the next morning. Then Sunday on my way home, my battery died.
ANYWAY, HOW WAS THE FURRY CONVENTION YOU ASK?
I had a good time! The night I got there, I caught Foxes and Pepper's Concert, which is the musical project of Fox Amoore and Pepper Coyote, two big musicans in the furry scene. If you're a fan of very folksy alt-rock, along the lines of say, Counting Crows.
The next morning, Fuzzy Logic had an escape room set up, which more cons should have. Escape rooms can do a great job of reinforcing the theme, get attendees to meet new people and are different than the usual fare. Obviously my team won, because Zero Escape vet here, duh.
I was lucky enough to secure a slot in the Artist Alley via their Lottery system (ALSO A THING MORE CONS SHOULD DO), and I did WAY better than anticipated. I think I sold more CDs there before a show than any other convention.
As for the show itself, tech issues made us start late, but I wanted an eager crowd, and I GOT ONE!
Definitely a great experience and I think there might be a higher cross over between furries and punk than with anime/gamers and punk.
SO ARE YOU A FURRY THEN?
...Let's say Thrash Panda was something of a "soft launch"
Then I went to AFO, and of course Tiny Waves killed it at the rave.
Though people asked me about Megaplex with the same tone you'd use to find out someone was in the hospital...
NEW SONG: "FUCK TERFS (BUT DON'T HAVE SEX WITH THEM)"
For Gay Wrath month! Got a lot of requests for it at Megaplex, so I figured, WHY NOT?
JAM OF THE WEEK: "We Are All On Drugs" by Weezer
The tech issues mentioned earlier were that my laptop died, so I had to use whatever backing tracks I had on Google Drive, and I didn't have the Backing Track of "Hunting Bigger Game" with "Magic" by Mystery Skull tacked on the end, so I requested house music, and this is what they came up with.
So basically this makes Jam Of The Week because a week ago I ran around shirtless throwing Magic The Gathering cards to this song.
NPR's Tiny Desk Contest was due this past week, so I farted out an entry 30 min before the deadline. I figured "Status Quo Radio" was that fine line between "Sounds good for NPR" and "Trupunx". Still, I'm on a hot streak with putting up video content!
JAM OF THE WEEK: "Q.U.E.E.N." by Janelle Monae
It's
Black History Month (which I'm making Black Current-cy Month), and I
firgured I'd focus these jams on black artists I like who are doing cool
stuff today.
First up, Janelle Monae. I've gushed about her before on this site, but she deserves way more attention, even with two movies coming out in 2016. "Q.U.E.E.N." is the first single of her 2013 album The Electric Lady, and while "Dance Apocalyptic" is my favorite track, this one can't be discounted, because it was the song that got me into her.
The music video starts off in this very clean, elegant museum, while a voice over talks about "time traveling rebels". Then the sick guitar riff kicks in and so it begins, slowly ramping up until Erykah Badu's verse breaks it down to the slick bassline. Finally, top it off a tight, defiant verse set to so,ething striaght out of a James Bond movie.
"Q.U.E.E.N." is everything thing I love about J.M.'s music: smooth, weird and proud.
I wanted to see Hidden Figures, where she plays one of the black female NASA mathematicians that helped launch the programs' first sucessful space missions but it's a movie and apparently I don't watch movies.
GIANT ROM 4!
Giant Bomb's Game Jam is going on right now, and I'm working on a project with frequent I'd Rather Not guest Trace Evans. The themes for this edition were "ONE GIANT CHOMP" and "EAST VS. WEST". EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW
Now I've got two weeks to catch up on, thankfully not a lot of ground to retread:
GODS AND MONSTERS: SLAYERS OF DECADENCE EPISODE 9
Another episode where we're out of our comfort zones with Ray playing a aggro goat demigod Landris to his trickster water god Zun Quib Slay, and me playing Explorer for the Future Fillion to my smashy-smashy War God Kindunos.
While it's not quite the finale, we did set up a REALLY good final chapter, and some groundwork is laid for Fillion to a perfectly politicking asshole.
-"I Should Have Killed You When I Had The Chance" Supercut
-"You Just Don't Get It Do You?" Supercut
-OK GO "Upside Down Inside Out
I'm fucking glad OK Go is doing these music videos. Back in the early
days of MTV, the first people to make videos were art students and
people who wanted to make weird shit, and they were the one of the first
ones on YouTube to go "FUCK YEAH! EAT OUR CONCEPTS, NEEERRRRRRDS!"
-Rock Band 2 Update brought us A LOT of good music, like "Ace Of
Spades" (the '08 rerecord where he says "But no one wants to live for
ever/but apparently I am), "Alex Chilton", "Alive", "Bad Reputation",
"Chop Suey", "Come Out And Play", "Down With The Sickness",
"Everlong"... that's only up to E. Rock Band 2's soundtrack was probably
my favorite out of the lot.
It was right at that confluence of "We haven't completely mined
everything yet" and "We have a shitton of money and promotion behind
us".
However, I think it's the soundtrack I got sick of the soonest. Like
GH3, it was the peak of it's popularity, the setlist was the most played
and there were setups EVERYWHERE. Especially "Livin' on a Prayer" and
"Anyway You Want It", two of the biggest singalong songs ever. I think
the only thing RB4 is missing now is Lego Rock Band and AC/DC, the
former I regret getting on.
-Mystakin Of The Axe v. 3 with the CORRECT flavor text
-The notion of a "Console Wars" I believe has subsided in the past
few years, primarily because everything has gotten so expensive, all the
games come out for pretty much everything. In response to that, the PC
Master Race comes out of the ashes, and the focus shifts between not who
has the better platform, but who plays their games in the best way.
The term comes from an old Zero Punctuation Review of The Witcher
(the first one), where Yahtzee states that the nature of the game's
PC-Only Nature meant it had to be very difficult and complicated.
What started as an ironic joke turned into a symbol of pride. "Look
at these snobbish assholes" became "LOOK, WE'RE SNOBBISH ASSHOLES!".
It's like if rich people introduced themselves with "As A Fat Cat
1%er..."
Also PCs are more expensive than consoles. Whereas the CONSOLE WAR
mentality was usually because you could only buy the one, PC mentality
is like "I spent more on this, why isn't this the best? I need 60 FPS!"
-Pokemon's Super Bowl Commercial
I was in the right age to get absolutely overwhelmed by the Pokemon
Machine as a kid, and this ad is peak "Sure, whatever kid, had a big ol'
adventure for yourself!" and presents a world where people can have
Pikachus for pets.
Now I want The Miz to play Giovanni in a live action Pokemon thing.
-The name of Demetri Martin's show was "Important Things With Demetri Martin". It
was all right, considering how often Comedy Central gives standup comics
a sketch show for a couple years then cancels it.
-Mystakin is one of the Authors under the Rhythm Authors banner, who Harmonix has been outsourcing some authoring work to.
Not necessarily a surprise, since Harmonix is independent studio and
has a fraction of the manpower they used to have, so reaching out to
experienced Rock Band Authors is a completely acceptable course of
action.
Rhythm Authors did a lot of songs for the Rock Band Network for some
very popular metal bands, such as A Day To Remember, Between The Buried
and Me and Five Finger Death Punch.
-Mystakin covers Single White Infidel:
-Mystakin covers Rhythm Bastard:
-Mystakin covers Arcanon:
4chan would paradoxically be NICER than most other places? Like,
they'd probably call us "gay faggots with shitty butt music" and it
feels so generic that I couldn't be offended. It's still offensive, but
it loops back around to being inoffensive since that's what they say to
everybody.
-Christian McBride: Cherokee, because I have to feature the improvised jazz solo at least once:
I find this odd, since technically this album came out in 2013... DUN DUN OPEN NOTES
The
hard separation between fast and slow is jarring, but I take it this
won the Grammy because the Pianist, Christian Sands is able to keep up
regardless. Like, the rest of the band is like "Hey, let's see if we can
fuck him up" and Christian Sands is like "Ha ha you wish motherfucker."
Or
possibly because the way Christian McBride plays bass is like a normal
guitarist busting out a solo. If this were an octave higher it would fit
right into a metal song. That guy's fingers must be swole as fuck.
What I'm saying is that it's a good song. Not one I'd have on my MP3
while I'm pumping iron in the gym, but one I enjoyed listening to
writing this recap.
-Nuclear Throne is the best class of
roguelike, because the "run" is as simple as pulling the lever on a slot
machine. Same with FTL, where a run doesn't require a major time
commitment, and if you lose, you're only out an hour at most.
-"Tacos are a renewable experience"- Rhythm Bastard
-Pro level strats with Jeff Gertsmann
-Mega64's Deadpool Movie Sketch
-So, in Magic the Gathering, there are 5 colors, each with it's own
strengths and weaknesses. I'll summarize as quickly as possible: WHITE- Usually white spells are about keeping you and your creatures alive for as long as possible. BLUE-
Usually blue spells are about playing the game on your own terms, doing
things such as making creatures weaker, or countering your opponent's
spells. BLACK- Black spells involve death of some sort, usually
either killing creatures, or interacting with your discard pile (aka
"Graveyard") RED- Red spells are about speed and direct damage, like
"Deal X damage to target creature or player" and creatures that can
attack very early on in the game. GREEN- Green spells are about big
creatures and lands, so you can make lands big creatures or get more
lands to get to your big creatures sooner.
Around the mid-2000s, Magic made characters called "Planeswalkers" that act as an embodiment of each color.
Jace,
who Jeff talked about is the blue mage, and he's the most popular
probably because A. He looks the most like what we think of a "Wizard"
and B. He's moody and brooding and all the anti-hero types in what is
basically a scrawny scene kid: Every bit of lore he's involved in goes as such: Someone tricks him, then he gets tortured, then he Protagonists his way to victory.
Garruk was the Green Planeswalker for a while, until the Innstrad block when he'd been cursed with a magic artifact. Origianlly he was going to use his magic to be a farmer, then local army wanted him, but him and his Dad were all like, "Nah, fuck that noise" and the Army killed his Dad. He then spent the next 10 years suplexing progressively larger beasts, then eating them.
Chandra is the Red Planeswalker. Guess what her magic preference is?
I agree with Jeff that her "Origin Story" is the best. She was raised on Steampunk India (Kaladesh) where her parents were Engineers but she was like "I'm gonna be King Of The Outlaws!" which is a coincidence because her parents were also working for a rebel alliance because the government was basically Reaganomics and was like "THE AETHER WILL TRICKLE DOWN!".
So when she was delivering some Aether the royal guard caught her, but she fought them off with her newly discovered fire magic. Her parents were like "That was cool and all, and we love you baby, but we need to GTFO".
They fled to a village, then the Royal Guard caught up with them and was like "Gorbachev, burn down this village. Chandra was to be excecuted in an arena, where at the last second she planeswalked away.
-Some highlights from the Sonic The Hedgehog Twitter:
Now, unlike most songs where I reconize the tune, but not the name of the song, this is one of those songs where I've seen the title, but never bothered to listen to the song until just recently, and as a song with jangly guitars, fast lyrics, and a sound straight from the 70's, I was naturally intregued. It was available for the Rock Band Network, then taken off.
Right, this is Sunday, right? Uh.... Damn, keep kayfabe, don't tell everyone how hype you are at 360 Backwards compatability, the new Star Fox game and the bazillion other games at E3....
Other than that, I moved all my stuff off my laptop to my desktop computer, I'm working on new material, and just generally cleaning house on certain things in the future.
On Sunday WHICH IS TODAY, two major events competed for my attention: Money In The Bank and the Nintendo World Championships.
MITB was underwhelming and when I found out Shaemus won the contract, I stopped giving a shit. Rollins vs. Ambrose will never not be golden, but, eh....
But the Nintendo World Championships? SUPER HYPE! This needs to be a thing at EVERY E3, especially now that speedrunning and Let's Plays are more of a thing.
I started watching about halfway through, when the second round began, and they were playing Metroid: Federation Force. One cool thing they did is that if you didn't place in a round, you went to a loser's bracket and played a game there. If you won that round, you were still in the loser's bracket, but you stayed in the game.
That was Super Metroid, where there first one to beat the end section got to stay in the game. Then Mario Kart 8 (top 3 finishers of a 3 track cup), and Balloon Fight of all things. Arin from the Game Grumps lost the Balloon Fight elimination round by a hair. Turns out he's pretty good at video games when he doesn't have to talk over them.
After that was Super Smash Bros. and the final round was Mario Maker, with ridiculous levels designed by Treehouse members. I think that, more than anything else, sold me on the WiiU. Between the Kazio insane levels, music making ones as seen in Little Big Planet, and, GUARANTEED a functioning computer system.
So my goal for this week, expect to see my MTG songs on YouTube, and a couple videos from me. This weekend is Treasure Coast Comic Con, so I'll be heading there to hand out a couple business cards.
-FUN FACT: I was sent the raw files for "Hot Topic Is Not Punk Rock" and had to reconstitute the song using the ProTools file, and add my own distortion. Part of me wants to try and finish it for the Custom Creators Collective, but that would be disrespectful to Lars. Also, my C3 energy is better spent on the Best Song Pack Ever consisting of "Super Rad!" by The Aquabats, "Let's Dance To Joy Division" by The Wombats and "Anal Cunt" by G.G. Allin.
-"Only God can judge me"- Jeff, an atheist.
-Arcanon is working on an Adult Content pack for C3, so "Anal Cunt" by GG Allin might be a possibility.
-Vocals in Rock Band were always hit or miss, and if Rock Band 4 allows for more expression, then I'm all for it. It's really a buzzkill when, even on Easy, someone who just wants to sing karaoke fails out and is given negative feedback. No Fail Mode as the default helps a little bit, but it's crushing when a player onjly scores 50%.
"I suck! I'm never going to play again!"
There's a colloquialism in Magic The Gathering for when there's a mechanic that can be seen as discouraging to players not quite ready to handle it: "Feelbads". For a game that invites such a casual playerbase, you want to avoid as many "Feelbads" early on in a player's career as much as possible.
-Final Fantasy X: HAHAHAHA! HA HA! HAHAHA! HA HA! HA! HA!!
-Canary Mary in Banjo Tooie was regarded for being very difficult. While Mystakin and Arcanon tried to argue the best ways to tackle her, I'll be lazy and post some tips from GameFAQs: "No-one can beat Canary Mary in less than 13 seconds (not even a
giraffe) as she cheats and adapts her speed to match the player’s skill.
If you play too well she always seems to win. We never did fix that one
properly…" (Translation: WE DUN GOOFED!)
"The main thing to remember with Canary Mary is to keep the interval between your button presses constant" (Translation: Wicked rubberband A.I.)
"If you're into mashing the button as fast as possible, go ahead.
However, if you feel like you're slowing down, press start to pause and
get the blood back into your thumb... or finger or whatever (nose?). As
long as you can stay ahead, it's all good" (Translation: Stop playing. Fuck this game)
The last method is one more suited to those who are a little more
desperate. If you're sick of trying everything and anything and just
want to finish the game 100%, buy yourself a turbo controller from an
online store or your local retailer if they stock them. Turbo
controllers allow the user to hold down a button and get the same effect
of mashing it at an extremely fast and constant speed - perfect for
beating Canary Mary. (Translation: Fuck this game, just cheat)
Also recommended:
-A spoon
-A pen
-Rock Band fret button
But, it makes sure to note that they fucked up the programming, so this won't work either.
Video Time? VIDEO TIME!
-"Barkerville" by John Drake
This week is just me practicing and stocking up on CDs and Posters.
As far as stuff goes, there's not much in the way of big guests, it's a very low key convention. Still, some fun events are happening, and I hope to see some vendors selling some cool stuff, and some neat cosplays. Plus, I'm always the highlight :D
There is laser tag, which has the opportunity to either be the coolest thing I've ever done at a con, or be the equivalent of the Dashcon Ball Pit.
Then again, Hero Hype Con is run by adults who know about things like "money" and "contracts", so it'll be closer to the former.
At this time I'd like to put over BTL Collectables, who usually have awesome stuff, and sell pretty much everything, from figures, to trading cards to comic books.
After this, I don't have any cons for the next month or so, and it'll be around that time when I'll start getting the Kickstarter ready.
There's going to be a lot of awesome guests there, like:
-Larry Hama, THE ORIGINAL CREATOR OF G.I. JOE!
-Steve Cardenas, THE ORIGINAL RED RANGER FROM MIGHT MORPHIN' POWER RANGERS!
-Larry Mainland, from THE WALKING DEAD
-RHYTHM BASTAR- oh wait that's me...
END OF THE LINE IS OUT!!!
Really solid animation. I've always wanted to make an SFM Music Video for "Boston Boom Bringer" or "Gang Of Nine", since people are doing absolutely incredible things with it.
I'm getting this spare PC I found up and running, and so far, it runs TF2 with no hiccups. It's a desktop, and is more powerful than my laptop, so I'll be using that more for production and gaming, and my laptop will be relegated to tour-mate, since the Wi-Fi on it has been busted for a while.
Regarding the album, THE COVER IS FINISHED, I REPEAT, THE COVER IS FINISHED.
Yeah, plenty of good stuff all around. Granted, there's been plenty of not so good news this week, with killer cops getting off the hook left and right, but at least it gives me the opportunity to post up this nugget from the Dead Kennedys:
Anytime someone says "Not all cops...""But a black guy shot a white guy this one time...""ALL lives matter!", etc., remind them that this still goes on, and by making it about them, they're enabling this crap to continue.
Fun fact: The guy who was Bojack Horseman was also the Hulk from my Hero Hype Con video.
JANELLE MONAE'S BIRTHDAY!
Can we talk about her for a second? Every time I look at her, I think “That’s the kind of thing I want to do!”
It’s earnest music wrapped up in something fantastic. You can tell
there’s a method to her madness, looking at the videos like “Many Moons”
and “Primetime”, which are mini sci-fi movies.
In the process
of making Status Quo Radio (my Team Fortress 2 inspired concept album),
The Electric Lady has become one of the biggest inspirations; an album
the rocks, an album that rolls, an album that takes you to another place
for a little while.
-The album? MORE SONGS BEING TRACKED! MORE COVER ART... ARTED! This thing is actually starting to take shape, and I couldn't be more pleased. I'm working with three awesome dudes making this all work right, so the end product can be something I'm proud of.
I would be remiss to not mention the hotbed that is Ferguson, MO. But people have been summarizing better than I could. All I'm saying is, when I fucked up at my job, I got fired. When I'm feeling insecure, I do something that makes me feel accomplished, even if it's that last little thing on my to do list. More on the podcast recap.
Back to videos that won't depress you, my Creator Owned Expo recap video is now up on YouTube:
Really, listening to all these pitches is very satisfying to hear, because I got a decent range of different kinds of people giving all different kinds of story ideas.
Next show is UmiCon Daytona, and I got my Square in the mail, so I won't run into a situation like last year where I was offered... alternative means of payment.
My Dad's in the hospital right now for his much delayed craniotomy. We're going to see him tomorrow. The operation went smoothly, now it's the days afterward that I'm worried the most about. I really hope he's cognizant enough to recognize us.
Creator Owned Expo

ORLANDO NERDFEST-
The Orlando Nerd Fest is an annual celebration of nerd music and
culture. The festival is commonly referred to by it’s acronym ONF. (ie.
#ONF2014)
This is going to be ONE HELL of a weekend for me, but after that, I'll be resuming work on Status Quo Radio. I'm looking for artists to do album art, and will start contacting them after this weekend, since I want to have the first two acts done.
IF YOU'RE INTERESTED, SEND ME AN E-MAIL TO rhythmbastard@gmail.com
Also, I'm looking to update my link bar, so hit me up!
-So, here's "Expiration Date", the TF2 short me and Mystakin geeked out about:
It's impressive how they've still been plucking away at this game for the past 7(!!!) years.
Also, "Sexual Congress" is:
A. The name of my Presidents of the United States of America cover band.
B. A sex move where one person begs the other for sex, nothing happens and instead they shit the bed.
C. Weird Al's poorly received "Sexual Healing" parody meant to spur voters in the midterm elections.
D. Classy way of sayin' boner-time
E. All of the above
-Dear Esther is the game that Jeff is complaining about, and here it is in ALL ITS RIVETING GLORY:
Things that would make Jeff love Dear Esther:
-Soundtrack by Bad Religion
-Puzzles that require thinking so out of the box that you're in another box
-Puzzles that require you to use Google to translate ALT into Braille into Morse Code
-A way to get on the damn boat
-"It's Always Sunny" clip for reference:
Fuck tha haters.
And I was right, it was the epiosde where "The Gang Wrestles For The Troops"
-Majesco: STILL EXISTS!
Current projects: COOKING MAMA 5 and porting Gone Home to consoles.
A very, very sad state of affairs indeed: The Mama series, movie games, ports, $5 bargain PC games on the Nintendo DS...
-HERE'S THAT MEGA64 SKETCH YOU GUYS!!!
-Weezer: Ehhh.....? I guess...? I kinda liked "Memories" of Hurley, but it doesn't seem like they've been trying anything too different. And I guess I can say that for their previous albums where I liked one song or two, but then again I haven't really listened to any of their recent albums in their entirety. It's like with Green Day and their "Uno! Dos! Tre!" triple album: if they waited on some of that, they might be able to make one excellent album.
-GWAR: Really, Oderus Urungus MADE that band. A great front man is ridiculously hard to replace. They can get a good metal singer, but to have one that was so into the character like Dave Brockie was would be like replacing MC Bat Commander. Like Queen, the singing ability can still be there, but the face of the band, however scarred and hideous it may be, is the soul of the band.
-YouTube Let's Play Discussion- I'm gonna skip over this a little bit, since Mystakin did bring up a lot of solid arguments, and mine felt kind of half-assed in comparison. Really mine just comes from a place of "Well, the people with the most money are going to fuck with all of this."
