Damn Welfare Queens

This title will so give me google hits from hardcore conservatives. Maybe they can beat out the people looking for the Guitar Hero Arcade Setlist.

All right, I gotta come clean on this: I can't for the life of me ind an accurate tab for the second half of the first solo, and the entire second solo. NOT TO WORRY! Only maybe 5 notes from the pentonic scale:

Slim Pickin's

I find myself right now in a bit of a quandry.

Black Hole Sun is really easy, until you get to the solo. If anyone can give me some sort of direction on this, like the most efficient way to do it, or possibly refer me to a step by step tutorial, that'd be great. OR if you'll give me a reprieve on this one and I'll play the rhythm guitar for the time being, and do the solo lesson at a later date.

I've switched over to working on "Gimme Shelter".

Now since I only have 2 songs from Tier 4 left, I'd figure I'd put up my DLC choices. Not a whole lot here, since there are only so few songs at this level I recognize.

So I picked "Breed" for my DLC selection and it's a toss-up:

"Boys Are Back In Town" by Thin Lizzy- I love this song. It alternates between a blues-boogie and hard, driving rock.

"Truckin'" by The Grateful Dead- This is the song "What a long strange trip it's been" came from.

Honky Stole My Bike

Finally! Now, my least favorite part of this was, like Mississippi Queen, they switch off between the lead and rhythm guitar parts. Listening to how they mixed it in Rock Band, it's pretty often. Basically, it switches off every 4 measures. This song wasn't that hard. This was what kept tripping me up on the solo:

Specifically that part. It's very quick, so you need to sweep pick. Basically, just hold the same shape, but sweep the pick down on the three strings in one stroke. It's like an arpeggio.

Not Making That Joke

Nope. But I WILL type up my lesson for "Don't Fear The Reaper"!

DON'T FEAR THE REAPER
There are little solo parts throughout the song, and require some memorization. Despite my less than perfect memory, these aren't too hard technically speaking. You don't have to change your position much, and there's no note shorter than an eighth. For me, it was playing this part up to speed AND cleanly:

This is another one of those lessons where I can't really give much more advice than "work it up to speed" It is a good opportunity to review fingerings:
A chord- middle finger on 2nd fret D string, ring on 2nd fret G string.
G chord- middle finger on 3rd fret lowE string, index finger on 2nd fret A string, pinky on 3rd fret highE string
F chord- index finger on 1st fret lowE string,ring finger on 3rd fret A string

Still not going to make that reference.

WARNING: Toxic Chemicals Ahead

TOXICITY

I've always thought System Of A Down was akin to Linkin Park: a band without substance and full of screams that appeals to the emo kids. But this song has made me really appreciate S.O.A.D. It alternates quiet, serene, haunting parts with out of control thrashing.

Plus Serj Tankaran looks kinda like Frank Zappa.

Anyway, first thing's first: you can't get away with standard tuning on this one. Drop the low-E string to a D. Here's an online app you can use to help you.

Another thing, the timing is in 6/8 measure. 6 beats per measure, eighth notes get one beat. If I find something to help me explain this, then I'll post it up.

The hard part is that "out of control thrashing", in the chorus and after the first verse riff:

That's not the hard part. This is the hard part:

It requires alternate picking and a lot of co-ordination. Middle finger over 3rd fret, index over 2nd fret.

Overall, not that hard a song. The riffs can be tricky and require fast fingers, but not too fast.

Like "Learn To Fly", this song has been mixed differently for Rock Band. The second time the verse riffs repeat is covered with palm muted open strings.

So remember that Open Mic Night that fizzled out? Remember how I said I was playing for 1 1/2 years before I started the Rhythm Bastard Experiment and know songs not on Rock Band?
Yeah, February 18th. Whatever song I settle on will be a lesson/DLC suggestion the day after regardless of whether I make it.

Also, 1fort is dead. It's been replaced by it's much more loquacious First Person Shouter.

Super Strokes

Steelers won the Super Bowl. I don't follow football, but it was really exciting to watch.

Fuck this song, and fuck it hard. It was great, and the chorus part once I got it down flowed, but it was a long road. I guess AC/DC was right: It's a long way to the top if you want to Rock and Roll.

It works along a scale, so keep index finger on the 9th fret, and hover the pinky over the 12th fret. It would work best if you bridge the 9th fret of the e,B,and G strings with your index and pick of or pluck off whatever string you need. Otherwise at this speed, you'll waste extra energy moving back to the fret board and changing to the lower string.

One thing to note: in the video below, you'll note that the Rock band chart has chords where the GH3 chart has the main riff. Those chords are (799---) and (-799--) (sorry, it's late andI'm to excited to look up the names.

It's a pretty close race: RB charted the main riff a bit better, but GH3 had the breakdown before the chorus down.

That's the main riff. Your hands will get RUINED from holding the chord shape. It requires a lot of stamina.

Not Quite There Yet...

I feel like I should have something here for all the people coming from a comment of mine at Fake Plastic Rock from this article, about how Guitar Hero and Rock Band may have influenced increased sales.

Here's my cop out ladies and gentlemen: The HARDEST parts from these SOLID SONGS and why I'm havin' a little trouble.

Reptilia- This song goes from babby-can-do-it easy to "Wait! My hands aren't that fast!" in a heartbeat. The chorus, which goes right into the solo (1st time around) is what's throwing me off.
OK, chorus now, solo later when I upadate:

Now, my comment that as these people giving me as many referals in the past 2 days as AltStrum has ever since I started tracking?

"My favorite is when you’re playing and someone says “Uh, you guys do realize those aren’t real instruments?”

What the hell are they expecting at that point?

“What? Aw, Thanks man! I knew something was up was when had to get these at GameStop. And that they don’t really make sound unless the PlayStation is on.”
And then they are worshiped for all eternity solely because of their keen observation skills.

Guitar Hero got me to take up the real thing. I still play fake plastic rock games, but they provide two different feelings:

Fake Rock provides accessibility. Me, my friends and family can start jamming without lugging any equipment around, or worrying if Person A knows song B. It’s all there. Even alone, the scoring and competition gives me a tangible measure of progress. The music comes to me.

The Real Thing is more primal than that, the satisfaction of “I, and I alone did it.” when I finally learned a tough riff. I can put feeling into how I play, and can just mess around with the damn thing.

I’ve turned this into The Rhythm Bastard Experiment (check site), where I try to learn Fake Plastic Rock songs on a real guitar. One of those tab books would help a lot though, but NOOOO, I’m Cheap Bastard. Plus, it would be helpful."

TL;DR- "Get a real guitar!" people can be douchebags, and next time I'm home, I'm taking a field trip to Guitar Center.

Putting My Girl In The Limelight

FYI, I'm skipping Creep for the sake of my wrist, and because I hate the song. Everything I've struggled through, but not Creep. It's not like it's a hard song, it's that I shouldnt be attempting barre chords like that when I'm recovering.

Hardest part was a -GASP!- Three way tie!

The chorus riff:

The triplets I have no advice for other than slowly work your way up. The frets are closer together that high up the neck, so it's easier to user you index, middle and ring fingers to fret those.

The chorus is an arpeggio between a modied G#minor (hold it like a power chord, but lift yuour finger after you pick the A string, then bring it back down over the Gstring), a modified E chord (on the third fret instead of the first) and and F# minor chord.

Fun to play, but you need to have fast hands.

And now that I'm done with Tier 3, on to Tier 4's first song...

ARE YOU GONNA BE MY GIRL
If you have any rhythm at all, it's really easy. Fast, loose, and only one hard part:
THE KEY HOOK.

I link to people if they can describe it better than I can. But that hook:

Coming Down The Road

These guys are playing all 500 someodd songs in Rock Band. Cheer them on!

N.B. They're ending with "Those About To Rock" from the AC/DC pack. EPIC!!!

First off and most importantly, my 21st Bitrthday! I want... uh... I don't know...a...multi-effects pedal? Any of these? Something Awful forum account? AC/DC track- Listen, I don't even have PayPal or GoogleAds, so I don't expect anything from you guys (all 3 of you).

Also, 2 things I won't even DARE to mention yet, since that usually jinxes them.

But more importantly, Tier 4. I haven't finished Limelight or Creep yet, but we can also vote on the DLC song! REMINDER: My choice for DLC song was Coheed and Cambria's "Ten Speed", because I love my brother for some reason, and that's his favorite song. And the lead singer has a funny voice.

"Saints Of Los Angeles" by Motley Crue- I don't really listen to Motley Crue, but it's interesting, since the Rock Band sales of this song were higher than other. traditional media.

"Going Mobile" by The Who- Because I wanted a Who song, damn it!

"Dammit" by Blink 182- Huh, how well that fits together. Yeah, Blink 182 fan here.

"3s and 7s" by Queens Of The Stone Age- I'll delve more into this if you vote for it or when I get to Guitar Hero 3, but note that this is a Tier 7 song in GH3.

"Bang A Gong (Get It On)" by T. Rex- Ever hear one of those songs all the time and can never put a name to it? Yeah, this is that song for me. Plus it'll get some Glam up in this.

"Dr. Feelgood" by Motley Crue- Someone reccommended this song (not for the experiment, just in General), and I like it. I now have a new name for...uh...nevermind...

"Hard To Handle" by The Black Crowes- Another song I hear all the time, love, but didn't know the title until Rock Band came along.

"Mr. Brightside" by The Killers- Radio-ready classic, that I'm 99.99% sure cribs "Ode To Joy"

"Rock n' Roll Band" by Boston- The only thing that disturbs me is that it sounds kinda like "Peace of Mind". Anything from Boston's self-titled album is gold though.

"Wonderwall" by Oasis- The basis for Green Day's "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams", and it sounds so similar, the two songs got mashed up into an awesome mix called Boulevard Of Broken Songs. The most accessible version (can't be bother to find a download link) is this cool video on NewGrounds.

"Stop!" by Against Me!- I have never heard this song I just picked it out at random

CHARGE!! Review!!!

Quick news first:
1.Sadly, my posting will be limited until the 3rd of January, because of the holidays and going away for vacation. Hopefully me wrist (and ankle) will recouperate.

2. I will try to finish the third tier before I have to go back the 26th of January, as well as a couple songs from Tier 4. They're getting harder now, so now's the time to buckle down. In an effort to post more frequent updates, I'll post song sections as opposed to whole songs.

3. My choice for Tier 4 DLC is one of my little brother's favorite songs, "Ten Speed (Of God's Blood and Burial)" by Coheed and Cambria. Reader's Choice DLC picks to come soon.

Now, onto the review:
Picked this one up for $8 at FYE.

I actually found out about The Aquabats (I refuse to use the exclamation points), via a Something Awful webcomic thread. Their TV show pilot surfaced on BoingBoing, and I don't remember what they thought of it, but I shook it off in favor of hilarity. On a wild hair one day, decided to check them out, and liked what I heard. But oddest of all was their superhero "background".

The Goon in me thought "What? Bunch of loving manchildren, trying zany monkeycheese poo poo. That's as gay as gently caress." (Without the filter: "Bunch of fucking manchildren, trying zany monkeycheese shit. That's as gay as fuck")
It's more or less pop-punk, and pop anything is TOTALLY GAY.
AND BATS CAN'T SWIM UNDERWATER

But I'm sure they don't care, and keep plucking along.

Gun to my head, if I were to describe it, I'd say it's like a very upbeat bastard child of the Dead Kennedys and the B52's. Which is apporpriate, given the fact that the lead singer kinda sounds like Bifara and the male vocals on "Love Shack". It's a little punky, little (bit more) poppy, little surf, little synth.

It gets a bit repetitive, most of the songs stick to the same few chords (it is punk after all), but unlike AC/DC there aren't the trademark solos. But after reading a review in my school's paper of their B.B. King's show, it's geared a bit toward "kids", so such a thing is to be expected. And by "kids" I mean it's accessible to kids (more than an AC/DC or Boston, or metal), but just crazy enough to get you listening too.

It's upbeat, catchy, and puts you in a good mood. But I was actually embarrassed to buy this album, for the reasons my Goon side mentioned. The songs are pretty off the beaten path, with stuff about parodying the music scene ("Fashion Zombies!"), nerds rising up ("Nerd Alert"), and random crap ("Mechanical Ape", which I didn't like too much, "Tiger Rider").

BOTTOM LINE: If you've ever said "What The Fuck?" and laughed, at the very least give one of their Myspace songs a listen. The whole Saturday-morning cartoon superhero thing might shake off some people looking for something deeper and more mature but what do you expect from a band that has a song called "Demolition Rickshaw"? If you want something ridiculous, but still has actual entertainment value, give it a try.

P.S. The lead singer is the probably-drug-addled mind behind a children's show called Yo Gabba Gabba! The star of the show is a DJ that sometimes opens for their performances, and has been dubbed "Gay Russian Army Urkel" by Joel McHale of The Soup.

And I mentioned The Soup last post didn't I? IT ALL COMES TOGETHER.
