Echo Chamber Post Game Episode 143

THIS SHOULD HAVE REALLY BEEN OBVIOUS

-OK, so as I mentioned last week, I do these things by working of general headlines and then writing about them. However, think of of this as my "For Those Of You Further Behind" look at Rock Band 4, since I picked it up THE DAY after we recorded that Episode.

-For some reason, I had this in my Bookmarks Folder to put on this week:

You know what's Rising Above? HER WEIGHT! ACK!

-Right, so I've been a little back on forth on RB4, and while it's still Rock Band, I still have this dialogue going on in the back of my head. The setlist isn't as big, bbut they're an indepentent studio now and can't pull in anything else. Customization options are barren, but the models look REALLY GOOD, and the venues, while missing the crazy effects I loved playing around with in the RBN days, make the venues feel more real.

The main complaint I hear is that "It was rushed to beat Guitar Hero to the market." I can see that, but it's like "When would they release it?" Another couple months might not have been enough to add anything significant, and waiting another year would be too long. To release it OTHER than the holiday season would be ridiculous. DLC exports have been spotty, and are slowly coming together, but I can still download all my old songs for FREE, and have even discover new ones.

All that said, Rock Band 4 is still worth playing because the Rock Band experience has ALWAYS been worth playing.

-Confession, I left my notes at work, so I'll try to remember exact topics we talked about:

-The Voting System: I've always been for this, and limiting my options to what songs I can pick keeps me from picking the same song, and has my exploring the setlist. I've only played by myself so far, so it's been more of a multiple choice test than a band feature.

-Freestyle Solos: As of right now, not a fan. It's a great idea, but it's off JUST enough that I shut them off, since I need to double check my calibration. Also, I'm playing by myself right now, so I'm more in the RAGH MUST PLAY GAME then the FUCK YEAH PARTY TIME mode.

-Tour Mode: Love it! Other than the really-not-there character creation options, it's an entertaining enough mode to play through.

For each tour you go out on, there's a decision you make beforehand. For example, "Do you buy a van with what little you have or do you let your uncle manage you?" which all boils down to stuff like "$$$ vs. Fans" or "Pick your own setlist vs. have it chosen for you". That's standard, but what I like is each little story that happens in between each decision. For example, before one of my shows in the loading screen text, Uncle Tony said that he's an awesome business man with dealings in the condiment business. Next show, he mentioned something about striking a deal. For my last show on the tour, my band was wearing "GRANDMA STAPLETON'S HORSERADISH SAUCE" tees. Nice little touch.

-Setlist surprises: "Your Love" by The Outfield. Always a one hit wonder, but it's a great 80's pop-rock song.

This has also been covered by The Aquabats, meaning it's an Objectively Good Song

There aren't a lot of Epic Marquee Songs this time around, but there's some good stuff.

-This was also saved on my Favorites this week for some reason:
Oh wait, that's the site's source code. Nevermind.

So, yay! RB4! yay....

-Oh yeah, and here's the Worst RBN Venue Ever:

Echo Chamber Post Game Episode 131

Y'ALL COME DOWNLOAD, Y' HEAR?

-Like most of our episodes, we usually come up with awesome ideas, and one I had was to change all designs of the Confederate Flag to this:

I think it's pretty fair. The South lost the war, and if you're still wearing this thing out of pride, then you're a loser. Like, you do know the Confederacy was all like "WE'RE TAKING OUR BALL AND GOING HOME! IT'S ABOUT ETHICS-" and then the Union was all like "Damn it, eat your broccolli you fuckers"

"Cool, we got all these slaves-"

"Nah, fuck that noise, slavery's illegal, you gotta pay 'em like regular people"

"But States Right's-"

"AMENDMENT! NOW IT'S DOUBLE ILLEGAL" Then Abraham Lincoln gave Robert E. Lee an Attitude Adjustment. John Wilkes Booth, like the fucking smark he is, shot the President in the head.

Now I'm tempted to edit in "Loser Flag" on all the episodes of the Dukes of Hazzard. A lot of work for a token gesture, since we're not getting rid of systemic racism, we're getting rid of one it's symbols. But token gestures make the millz billz.

As much as we like to talk shit about the South and turn it into a punchline, read this first.

Would you like to see more "History With Rhythm Bastard"? Let us know in the comics below!

-RHYTHM BASTARD'S NUZHAWK CHALLENGE:
This is only for any Tony Hawk's Pro Skater game with a "Classic" Mode, where you're required to complete objectives to move on to the next level.

THREE RULES:
1. You must complete enough objectives in ONE TWO-MINUTE RUN to move on to the next level.
2. In any Competition, whenever you finish your first combo or bail, THE HEAT ENDS.
3. NO LEVELING UP ALLOWED

That's it. I was able to finish all of THPS2 and 2X's career modes, but THPS1 uses tapes, and more tapes are required per level to move on, so while I might have enough saved up from previous levels to advance quickly, I can't go back and do the earlier ones.

Plus San Francisco in THPS1 is total bullshit.

-Here's a comic that explains Nuzlocke.

-And here's the Two Best Friends Nuzlocke Run:

-Another ridiculous challenge I heard was one of my friends did a 120 Star Run of Super Mario 64, but every time you died, you had to do 10 push ups. There were other rules of course, but I forget them a year later, but that stands out.

-There are some "Hard Mode" drafts for Magic The Gathering that Jeff was talking about, namely dedicated sets like Unhinged, filled with ridiucouls comedy gimmick cards, and Conspiracy, a set meant to be drafted in an 8 man pod, but played in 2 4-man games. I'd love to draft either one, but Conspiracy is old news at this point, and Unhinged is difficult to find.

Both experiment a lot with the game, with Unhinged making you aware of what the other player is doing (like a card that you lose life if you tap your nails, etc.), and Conspiracy plays around with the fact that A. Other people are playing, and B. The draft format itself.

-MahJong Manga is called MUDAZUMO NAKI KAIKAKU. You can read it here. The Manga Fox Page sums it up as such:

Junichiro Koizumi. Prime Minister of Japan, or God of Mahjong incarnate? Watch him clash with other world titans such as George W. Bush, Kim Jong Il, and Vladimir Putin in the one force that matters in the political world: mahjong.

Like, a very small part of me finds dumb bullshit played 100% straight and serious as this. While I'm sure the comic itself is a play on world politics played from the point of view as a Japanese man, I'm not so sure it works as a series. Maybe a CollegeHumor thing.

Echo Chamber Episode 125

THIS EPISODE'S GOT WHAT YOU NEED!

-":Listen, Johnson, we need a device meant to calm down hypersensitive people, you know, for those suffering from autism, whatcha got?"
"Well, we got a device that gently squeezes people like a box of hugs."
"Good, MAKE IT LOOK LIKE A DEATH MACHINE"

-PINK FLOUD MUSIC VIDEO, "Another Brick in the Wall"

-So far the "Must-Have" games for the WiiU seem to be:
Mario 3D World
Super Mario Bros Wii U
Wonderful 101
Super Smash Bros.
Mario Kart 8
Hyrule Warriors
It's a solid lineup, but like with the Xbone, I need something MORE...

-The Amiibo shit is getting ridiculous, but I guess Nintendo erred on the side of caution in the event it would be another e-Reader, so I can see them being conservative with the release, but surely they're going to be coming out with the new waves a little more frequently. If/when I get a WiiU, I'd only want the Capt. Falcon., Little Mac and Jigglypuff Amiibos, because I love punching shit.

-According to HMK, the Nintendo World Championship prequalifiers will be Ultimate NES Remix, for the games Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, and Dr. Mario. One of the qualifiers is in Miami, so I might try to get my brother to go, but that would involves waking up on the weekend, so I doubt he'd be down for that.

-Here's the Seanbaby recap I mentioned: SKIP ROGER'S VIDEO GAME TIPZ!!?!!

-MEGA 64 CROSS NINTENDO

-The day after this episode aired I had to leave work early (hit my 40 hours), so I was able to catch some of the IGN stream, and here's some tiddles and bits:
SETLIST SO FAR:
-Footage was a little choppy, but it was still in Pre-Alpha. It looked great, though.  -During downtime in certain sections of songs (no vocals/bass/etc.), you can vote for the next song in general categories (70's song, songs with female vocalists, David Bowie), and everything seemed to work right off the bat, as they played a lot of older songs.Seemed to work really well, and the random element could help people rediscover songs they didn't know they had.
-They seem to be playing up the "live show" aspect by making the vocalist say things like "HEY BOSTON" or "ARE YOU READY FOR MORE?" before the next set of songs starts. Seemed to slow things down, unless that's how they hide loading, but hopefully that will be made more relevant as we find more details.

-ALL TRAILERS ARE THE SAME:

Echo Chamber Episode 123 Post Game

WE'VE RAISED INFINITY% OF OUR KICKSTARTER GOAL

-Our Kickstarter Goal was $0, so in theory, we've made our money and so much more.

-Happy birthday Jeff!

-Luther, Anger Translator at Press Correspondents Dinner:

Colbert got in a bit of trouble at the dinner he was at because the Republicans didn't know he was a parody. Believe it or not, the laugh track and jokes the fact that it was on Comedy Central didn't tip them off. Or rather, I guess right-leaning candidates were going in expecting him to be less critical.

-Yooka-Laylee Kickstarter!
I didn't play much of Banjo-Kazooie, but I did beat all of Donkey Kong 64,and it's a wonder how I made it through all of that without achievements or anything to encourage you. Then again, I was, like, 8 when Mario 64 came out.

Mostly the reason that these kinds of games aren't made any more is threefold:
1. Metroidvania style games are more in vogue among indie developers, with their focus on exploring rather than collecting and platforming, preferring to go with one long level as opposed to several different ones.
2. Those games are seen more aimed at children, so less effort is put into them, and the excessive amounts of effort in design, objectives and gameplay found in the earlier games is lost, as to make a shorter, more profitable turnaround.
3. Games can't do one thing anymore. AAA titles cannot simply be "Shooter", "Action", "RPG", etc. In a bid to keep players playing and seem like more game than "the other guy".

-Closest thing to a Super Mario 64 skybox I could find.
http://www.mariowiki.com/images/thumb/7/76/Bob-omb_Battlefield_64.png/280px-Bob-omb_Battlefield_64.png

-Stop and Swop educational video:

-Also similar to the ice keys and eggs was the island in the Dam Mission in Goldeneye 007. It can still be seen in the main game, but has since been removed for the sake of a tighter game.

-FREE GAME IDEA: Jousting with Subway Sandwiches in the Subway on Segways. NEXT LUDUM DARE!!!

-The fictional sport I was thinking of with the trampolines and the pool of water was Kosho.
From Wikipedia:
Kosho (Old Pine Tree), a style of martial art practised in the live action television series, The Prisoner. The art in the series is far different than the real art practiced by follower of James Mitose. In the series two combatants dressed in long coats, helmets and reinforced gloves face off on opposing trampolines separated by a pool of water, all of which is surrounded by an elevated ledge and railing. All surfaces are open to use, and the art includes striking and grappling skills, as well as acrobatic manouvres. The goal is to force one's opponent into the pool.

-"Jumpin Jack Flash" from Elite Beat Agents, the best version of the song, and the best setup for any song ever.

-'Ready Steady Go" by Zebrahead cover:

-Here's the Next Generation Article I'm talking about.
It's astounding how many of those actually came out and had a gigantic impact on the system. That article was in May of 1997, before Goldeneye, Legend of Zelda, Banjo Kazooie, Super Smash Bros, F-Zero X and all the other classic games came out for the system. There were a couple Japan-only projects, hinging on the 64DD, but even in the early days it was amazing to see what was coming out for such well-remembered system, and to see what failed to manifest.

-"I don't know enough about programming!"- Mystakin, author of several Ludum Dare games.

Echo Chamber POst Game Episode 122

WELCOME TO ECHO CHAMBER

-This is why I said Welcome To Chili's:

-This is why that guy made a welcome to Chili's meme:

-Whenever someone says "You do know that's fake, right?" they're doing it to say "You're having fun with something I don't like, so I'm going to invalidate it"

It's like, what do you expect me to do? "WHAT? GAMESTOP LIED TO MEEEEE!!!" and throw it down? Stop playing? What? Tell me how I am supposed to react to your genius insight. I could stop playing the game. Would that please you? Or is Dave Matthews coming out of nowhere and sucking your dick for protecting the integrity of music reward enough.

Wrestling is fake? I thought Bray Wyatt really was a swamp cult leader, The Undertaker was a wizard, and Vince McMahon was a really crazy person who hired sociopaths and violated labor laws, then telivised it because I'M VINCE MCMAHON GODDAMNIT! Would you like to turn off the TV and watch something you'd like? Or I could make wrestling real, and give you an Attitude Adjustment, because you sure as hell need one.

-Mega64: Shitting on the GDQs?

Things missing (according to Mystakin):
-Kappa faces
-Dongers raised
-"Gold Splits"
-A-holes running alongside them telling them they suck and they can do the IRL easier.

-"It's like League of Legends, mixed with a dating sim, mixed with Fat Princess, mixed with Tinder"- Rhythm Bastard

-"Update to our Tinder MOBA Fat Princess Game... It has to take place on hardwood floors"- Rhythm Bastard

-For those of you further behind, here's a time lapse of Mystaking making his game LIVE ON TWITCH!!!!

-"I really like the part when Michael Bolton sung about anuses"

-Heads up, Jeff: "Lust for Life" was not on that Iggy Pop live album.

Echo Chamber Post Game Episode 121

DOWNLOAD THIS EPISODE IN IMAX OR IN 3D OR IN D-BOX

-I separated a mp3 of out Paul Blart discussion for animating purposes.

-Also not discussed on the Paul Blart discussion: Blartsonas. Like, I'd see people on Tumblr posting drawings of themselves with mustaches in mall cop uniforms- I mean, in their Mall Cop AU. Everyone would have their own shitty form of transportantion, like instead of a Segway, it would be a Rascal Scooter, or maybe a Razor Scooter, or even a ripstick.

You KNOW there's going to be one grimdark edgy motherfucker who's Blartsona's going to look like one of those also-ran emo bands from the mid-2000s, and try to chase people on one of these:

Malachite Black
AKA: Dark Shadow Lord
Age: 14
Transportation: Ripstick
Favorite Mall Stores: Hot Topic
Background: Dark Shadow Lord is an orphan who developed his magic shadow powers while he was in the orphange. All the rest of the kids made fun of him and didn't like him so he killed them all. Eventually a secret government agency (thanks, Obama) recruited him because he was the best at using his Dark Shadow Powers. Now he dispenses Mall Justice at his local mall where he brutally murders criminals with his magic shadow powers which he totally has.

-I REFUSE TO LOSE TO ANIME!

-Push The Baz for Smash.

Can we talk about The Baz for a minute? Cuz I want to talk about the Baz.

Originally based off a rejected Street Fighter Design from an episode of the Two Best Friends offshot series Fighterpedia, The Baz is the hypest fighter to ever grace a console. CAN YOU FEEL THE STORM? He'd be Pikachu mixed with Captain Falcon

In addition to being used as a create-a-character in numerous wrestling games, Zubaz has also been the go-to character for a lot of the games the group has Kickstarted. Pictured above is his appearance in Divekick, where he originally KOed his opponents with a trail of lightning after his kicks. Later, he was revamped so he used his whip to swing into his opponents.

http://oyster.ignimgs.com/mediawiki/apis.ign.com/shovel-knight/thumb/b/b9/Baz.png/468px-Baz.png

The next game he appeared in was Shovel Knight, where he appeared as a wandering fighter that appears on the overworld map. He still kept the lighting powers and the swinging, and kept a similar look to his appearance in Divekick. He still has two more appearances lined up, again, based off projects the Best Friends Zaibatsu Kickstarted:

File:Zubaz Skullgirls Beowolf.jpg

From the fighting game Skullgirls, upcoming DLC fighter Beowulf has Zubaz's palatte (#24).(pictured above, with Woolie and Matt from Two Best Friends Play)

File:Mechazubaz

Then he goes to 400 ft tall. anbd fights Kaiju, still keeping ther lighting powers.

In conclusion, Nintendo, CAN YOU FEEL THE STORM?

-GUITAR HERO GAMEPLAY:

I think if Rock Band 4 says, "Yeah, you can use this one too, we found ways to map it" then Harmonix won.

-Saxaphone solos in 2011:
"Edge Of Glory" by Lady Gaga
"Last Friday Night" by Katy Perry
"Jamie" by Akira The Don

-Raising our chocolate rations from 30 grams to 20 grams is a reference to 1984. If I can find a way to put that in an elegant way I'd make it a regular saying.

-1099 is absolute bullshit. I don't think I've had any good job where I was paid on a 1099. If it looks like a real job, smells like a real job, and you get paid on 1099, RUN.

-Steak and Blowjob Day is March 14th. Somethinng tells me this was created by the same people who say the HATE HATE HATE VALENTINES DAY CAUSE IT'S SO BULLSHIT WE WONT DO ANYTHING.

-"Could God make his dong so massive, even he could not suck it?"
"You can't spell dong without God"

-Anyone catch the Homeless YuGiOh player call back?

-Super Win The Game IndieBox:

-So here's the news on the casting breakdowns. If you read the leaked script, Wham! is an appropriate working title, kinda like how Avengers was "Group Hug" and Captain America was "Freezer Burn" which both sound like Steven Segal movies that come on in 2 in the afternoon on a Wednesday. CopyCat, Ajax, Weasel and Blind Al are all for a lock. I really hope this doesn't turn into Deadpool: The Game: The Movie

I'M A SHARK! I'M A SHARK! DOWNLOAD EPISODE 113!!

-The song "Four Five Seconds" is actually pretty good, and features Rihanna very nice nicely. Like seriously, I'm digging this song, and it'll probably end up on my "Top 40 Songs I Could Stand"

-Left shark is a meme. LEFT SHARK IS A MEME. LEFT. SHARK. IS. A. MEEEEEEEME!!!

-Yeah, the Seahawks really botched the end to the Super Bowl, which is a shame because I was- GOD FUCKING DAMMIT!

-So here's the Breaking Madden Archives

A small party of me hopes that game designers are looking at things like this and Video Game Championship Wrestling to better program AI in their games, mainly in behaviors that keep coming up over and over again, because stuff like this is something you can't really test for.

-Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy was a pretty good movie, taken on it's own. I'm a little glad it didn't get a sequel, because A. There's a line referring to "The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe", and it refers to an end of the Universe in reference to SPACE, where as the restaurant in the books is at the end of time, when that whole heat death bullshit takes place.

Here's where I'd post the "whale monologue" I was talking about, but I figured I'd have this wedge into your brain:

-So, the reason why I said "Amen!" after Jeff started talking about the musical break, was a reference to the "Amen break", one of the most famous breaks in music.

-That day was also Nicolas Cage's birthday, so that explains Jeff's Heat Seeking Panther line. REMINDER: Only 2 movies have made me nauseous: "A Clockwork Orange" and "The Weather Man". The only thing I remember from that movie is Michael Caine talking about his daughter's cameltoe.

-This is what it's like living with my parents.... kinda...

-The only way Arcanon's custom gun would have been cooler if it had its enemies mom engraved on it. He can always say "Well, OFF TO VISIT YOUR MOTHER!" every time he fires off a shot. He just does range shooting, but I'm sure pieces of paper have feelings too. Since trees have, ah fuck it.

Echo Chsmber Post Game Episode 105

 EPISODE 105 JOINS THE BATTLE

-Jeff DID visit me in Florida, and we did hang out, and it was good. WE FOUND A BOWLING ALLEY! Seriously. We were in City Place in West Palm Beach, and we come upon this club on the street called "Revolutions". It looked really sketchy, and we thought it was like, a gay bay or an underground fight club, but it was actually a bowling alley with an arcade and the bar.

-Arcanon has wrong opinions about the best Amiibo

-Adult Job For Grown Up Money needs to be a game. Also, Mario: The Lawyer. Seriously, we give you people FREE video game ideas, and not ONE has been made. We all have Grown Up Money, we can put a bounty out there. The bounty will not be a lot, but we still love you.

-What I tried to bring up in the podcast, was that in the game Day of the Tentacle, you can play Maniac Mansion in its entirety.

-YOU CAN DOWNLOAD MONUMENT VALLEY RIGHT NOW!!!

-Five Nights At Freddy's was done by a pretty hardcore Christian dude. It's cool though that he made the game just for the sake of making a horror game.

-The "Whales" discussion: It's good money, but it's not a sustainable business model. You still need to focus on people to convert into whales or giving new things for them to spend money. However, it's still a gamble, and it's good policy to not bank on one source of income.

Back in the early days when expansion packs were something regular, the company had to make a large investment for a lot of content that had to warrant a new CD-ROM printing, a new box and shelf space on the brick and mortar stores. It took investment and effort. Nowadays, DLC can be delivered in smaller packages and almost immediately without installation, so ANYTHING can be DLC.

But it's a hard balance to strike, because making anything still requires resources, and you can't pay for those resources by throwing a bunch of shit in the player's direction and think, "Someone's going to pay for it!" Put too many pay to win roadblocks in the player's way, and they won't get far. Put too much extra cosmetic stuff in the game, and it might not get played.

Plus, if whales are so smart, THEN WHY DO THEY LIVE IN THE OCEAN?

-The Jack Thompson thing is real though.
Let's sum up the arguments being made:
Anita Sarkeesian- Hey, video games can use these things that reinforce tired gender bullshit less often.
Jack Thompson- Ban this video game because banning shit is all I know how to do.

-Gravity Falls is a fantastic series.

S2e5 edgy on purpose

Soos and the Real Girl was a pretty good episode, despite coming out around the same times as Five Night's at Freddys.

-When Paolo mentioned "HATE. HATE." I was thinking of "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream" with AM's Pillar Of Hate.

-ROLL THAT BAKED BEAN FOOTAGE:

-When Jeff mentioned Andrew Huang's song's "Water", I thought of the song "Drop" by COrnelius which is along the same lines:

-We're getting a Deadpool movie!!! YES! YES! YES!

-Seriously, if you're not hyped, READ THIS ARTICLE. Fun fact: Tim Miller was the special effects director for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and became a director JUST FOR THIS MOVIE. If there is any movie I'd want Deadpool to rip off, it'd Scott Pilgrim.

-Just sayin' Fox. I too can wear a green shirt over black DP-T and stand next to a guy dressed as Deadpool:

-Real Footage of Nicholas Cage's Agent:

-Athreos and Erebos are two of the Gods from Magic: The Gathering's Theros block. Erebos is the God of the Dead, who is in charge of the underworld, and Athreos is the God of Passage, that ferries the dead to the underworld.

-Vault of Glass, Destinypedia entry. WARNING: SPOILERS.

-There's a Wiki here for Final Fantasy speedruns. A breif look at some of the run times show that the runs get the longest at around Final Fantasy X/X-2, and are shortest around 3/4. There's also a strategy guide here for some of the series, which gives credence to the theory that sometimes speedrunners know the game better than the people who made it.

-Wikipedia article on the Koopalings. Like the Katt and Falco shipping war from last week, there's been a very tumultuous debate on if they're Bowser's children are not.

-Godfuckingdamnit U2. BONO YOU ARE NOT PUNK ROCK. Bono Koopa would be rejected from the Koopaling because Bowser would immediately wreck his shit. This marketing move goes with Bono's definition of punk rock, as it "stirs things up and annoys people", but it is also very against the populist ideals of punk rock by serving the very people that deserve to be annoyed.

U2 claiming the Songs of Innocence release is punk rock is like saying that cable companies holding monopolies over territories and practicing harmful anti-consumer policies are punk rock because "it annoys people".

-I TOOK IT, AND THREW IT ON THE GROUND

-The whole discussion on "Corporate Trust" thing is very odd, and mired a lot of bad blood. It's akin to whatever happens when upper-middle class white people discover a new word like MSG, or gluten, where they become hyperaware of things they've been enjoying the whole time. Remember when all the info about the Xbox One came out during the same time all those NSA leaks occured?

But, this should be the thing that makes people more savvy and cautious to these types of situations, and look for alternatives that you are more comfortable with. Or you can complain and fall into the same traps. Whatevs.
