Status Quo Sunday Has A Lot To Be Proud Of

HAPPY PRIDE MONTH!!!
This marks the first anniversary since the Pulse nightclub shooting here in Orlando, and the lessons we've learned have been ignored by this administration.

Now more than ever, it's important to remind all our LGBT friends that your lives matter.

 500 LIKES ON FACEBOOK!

I was going to set up a victory stream tonight, but it'll have to wait until Wednesday.

It was a long way to get here, and it was hard, but I'm thankful for each and everyone of you :D

MOMOCON COSPLAY VIDEO!

First time I've done one of these in over a year. I've been sitting on a couple ideas for a while, but Momocon was big enough that I wanted to go back to this series, and highlight some cosplays I thought were neat. Plus, it shows that I'm not just there to work, I get just as excited to get my geek on as you all are.

JAM OF THE WEEK: "Hard Times" by Paramore

A long way away from "Misery Business", eh?

Hard Times grew on me the more I listened to it, and can appreciate it as its own thing. Paramore have been moving toward Blondie-esque pop-rock since their self titled album. Even the music video has that dreamy neon color scheme that was so big in the 80's (allegedly). It's not sticking with me as hard as some of their other work, but it still brings a smile to my face and a groove in my heart whenever it comes on.

3000 BRIDGADE!
I am happy to announce that I'm working with the 3000 Brigade!

In their words:
"We are the 3000 Brigade! We are here to keep the peace in the Nintendo Universe... and put on kick-ass shows! We are a troupe of performers committed to creating enjoyable Nintendo/Video Game-parody shows, rated "M" for mature!"

I saw them at Mizucon this past year, liked what I saw, and wanted to get involved! I've have been working with them for a couple months now, and I'm really excited to show you what we've been working on!

This year our shows are going to be at the Anime Iwai events, with a preview show at Mini Iwai this Father's Day.

Status Quo Sunday INVANDED ATLANTA!

MOMOCOOOOON!

The show actually happened! I played it, and people liked it! It's my first out of state con that I performed at, and I hope to do much more into the future, especially since I now need to know what do for future shows, and how to expand my setup and performance for the next one.

Momocon was awesome, and reminded me a lot of PAX East, but with WAAAAY more elbow room.

Most of my time there was spent on Magic stuff: I joined the Magic League to earn free cards, and got to catch a couple of the MtG Events. As it turns out, the people from Magic The Gathering really like my music and love the podcast I'm a part of Voice Of All!

This was a picture I took with members of the Magic Story staff, Kelly Digges, Alison Lurhs and Michael Yichao after the Magic Story Panel:

In the front is a cool guy named Wil, who made them sign Test Of Metal, which is where a millenia old plansewalking dragon notroious for his ruthless scheming says something tastes like "goat balls" and calls planeswalker Tezzeret, a very talented engineer, "Tezzy". Yeah, it might rival "Mills College Anime Club" for most embarassing thing I've read.

Anyways, you can read up on the Magic Story panel on my Tumblr.

You can also watch this video where I revivemy Dovin Baan voice:

MAGFEST VERSUS

Magfest did its own version of Nick Arcade. Nuff said.

INDIE GAMES

You know what's awesome? A con where you can play a shitton of indie games! What's better than that? Playing all those indie games without having to wait so much!

Some favorites:
Use Your Words- Created by BrentalFloss, this is a game in the vein of Jackbox Party Pack games, where you use your cell phone as a controller to type in responses to the prompts. The main difference is that it's not focused on getting the right answer, but giving the funniest response. There's also "Decoy" answers that add a bit of guesswork to the mix, to discourage you from picking what would be an answer that would get less points. The retro 60's TV Show art style looks appealing and contributes to the overall "kayfabe" the game is going for. There's a lot of overlap, but priced right, this could solidly fulfill its own niche.

Rise Of The Metronomicon- Dubstep Fireballs. It's a rhythm game with RPG Elements. Think Amplitude, where completing a measure grants you an attack or spell. There was only a demo setup at Momocon, but there were hints of a deeper system going on. The soundtrack features the likes of Ben Briggs, DJ Cutman, Mega Ran, and Jimmy Urine from Mindless Self Indulgence. You're not getting big names here, but I enjoyed the tracks they did have. I'm holding off until it comes for consoles, but you can get it now on Steam.

Distance- Easily the most polished game there, Distance barely had an empty seat all weekend. Distance is a driving/platformer game where you drive A FLYING CAR? It looks great, and while there are a couple spots where things get sticky, it's still in Alpha with a ton of new features being added regularly. There's hints of a story toward the end of the demo, but the three levels I got to play presented a satisfying experience that I might be tempted to speed run.

Grid Masters- Sometimes people will remember the weirdest games, and I'll be on that shit. For me, that game is Mega Man Battle Network. Grid Masters plays out like a fighting game with that setup, but instead of the randomness of the "cards", you get abilities on cool downs like a MOBA.The demo was setup in an acrade cabinet, which helped sell the fact that it's a fighting game. Still some tweaks to be made, but definitely worth keeping an eye on!

Brawlhalla- I've seen this game everywhere, but never got to play it. Basically it's a free tro play Super Smash Brothers, but with even simpler controls. You choose from a variety of interesting characters who's official lore could only disappoint you, and you try to knock the other characters off the platform. Like I said, Super Smash Bros., but it also is a little floatier in the way Tekken is where you can juggle characters if you're good enough. I got it off Steam, and looking to put some more time into it.

Status Quo Sunday IS GOING TO MOMOCON MOFOS!

MOMOCON!

It's HAPPENING! AHHHH!!!

Remember, the show is at 4 PM in the Omni International Room.

I still need to determine what other panels I'm going to, but I'll be there! Even Thursday has looked really exciting!

JAM OF THE WEEK: "Canary In A Coal Mine" by The Police

OK, I only picked this because I JUST found out that it's very possible Zenyatta from Overwatch was named after a Police album, Zenyatta Mondatta.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/15/Police-album-zenyattamondatta.jpg

Zenyatta is one of the playable heroes in Overwatch.

File:Zenyatta-portrait.png

Mondatta was the Omnic Monk who was assassinated in the "Alive" short.

File:Mondatta Alive Speech.png

We all caught up? Good.

I never associate The Police with words like "Happy" or "Upbeat", but it turns out The Police can turn out a good summer jam, eh? "Canary In A Coal Mine" is a fast paced reggae song about someone who's a hypocondriac. It's not deep or difficult to play, it's an enjoyable song from a band I usually associate with more dour fare.

"Don't Stand So Close To Me", the lead track off the album sets kind of a downer tone for the rest of Zenyatta, which is prime Florida Driving Music. Also the rest of the album isn't about pedophilia, which is good.

RICK AND MORTY IS SOME GOOD STUFF

Shocker, right? Imagine if Futurama went more toward the "Twilight Zone", where it's not so much "ALL THE FEELS!", but more like "Let's play around with this concept for 30 minutes and see how far we can take it. For all the WACKY SCIENCE ADVENTURES!, there's this really sad undercurrent to everything. My favorite episodes are where Morty wants to save someone and ends up killing thousands in the process and I always like B-plots focusing on Morty's parent's terrible marriage.

The thing is, you see all of these memes and catchphrases that pop up from the show like "Get Schwitfty", "Wuba Lubba Dub Dub!" and "I'M MR. MESEEKS!" and you see them on T-shirts from Hot Topic and shouted at cons, but those are within the first 5 minutes as the launchpad for the rest of the episode.

It's streaming on Hulu and Adult Swim, so check it out!

Status Quo Sunday STARTS A REVOLUTION

LESS THAN 20 DAYS UNTIL MOMOCON!

NEW SONG! "AETHER REVOLT"

Mostly what prompted me to finish this was God-Bird's really good cover that I photoshopped to hell.

Most of this was written back in January, but as with me, other shit got in the way and I've found the motivation to finish it.

JAM OF THE WEEK: "Die Anywhere Else" (as covered by RichardEB)

Hey, the 2006 Warped Tour called, it wants... all its music... back... Yeah! Take that, Rich... who did that really good Undertale album!

Anyway, while I haven't played Night In The Woods yet, it looks like a really neat experience. "Die Anywhere Else" makes sense within the context of the game, which is about a girl who drops out of college and returns to a boom town that has busted. Her town sucks, but now she has nowhere else to go. Jeff called it a "furry millennial simulator", and from what I heard about that game, it seems #relatable.

There are TWO ways you can cover a song about sadness and leaving your : Extremely dour ala Gary Jules' "Mad World" or THIS.

Richard's cover amps up what was an 8-bit cover of a The Cure song into something that could easily be in the Top 40 charts somewhere in the time between "Sugar, We're Going Down" and "Misery Business".

FANDOM ALBUM UPDATE

So, here's the tracks:
1. "Fire In The Hole" (Overwatch- Junkrat)
2.  TBD (Overwatch)

Status Quo Sunday Is Back On Time

Remember to vote on the songs for the upcoming Fandom Compilation! Polls are on the right!

NEW SONG COMING THIS WEEK!

Along with a "single" version with some extra goodies. It is my long overdue Aether Revolt song, and the single version will include a bonus treat from some of the good people at Voice Of All!

MOMOCON!

More to come soon, but again, if you want to help raise some funds for Momocon, you can help by purchasing some stuff from my Bandcamp page!

NEW T-SHIRT DESIGN! DOWN TO DUEL?

Down To Duel? Black T-Shirt Front

This T-shirt makes it super easy to find people to play Magic The Gathering with at large conventions, GPs, or your local game store! Just check off, or put a pin next to the decks you have on you, and you're good to go!

A shirt idea I've had for a while, since I'm the guy that tries to hit up EVERYONE for a game at cons.

JAM OF THE WEEK: "All The Final Fantasy Battle Themes"

So, I'm working on a... thing... and I was looking to get inspired by listening to some old Final Fantasy battle themes during my drive to and from Soul Crushi- I mean, work.

Hey, turns out some of these are pretty good! The only ones I dislike are the Dissidia remixes; they sound like the Watermelon Pizza equivalent of the original songs. Yeah, I'm sure you can recognize it, but how it's put together is just wrong. It's like saying a Pop Tart is a sandwich.

Anyway, some of these are pretty good, Final Fantasy 6 and 10 probably being my favorites. 13 wins the award for "Best Song Despite How Much I Hated The Game"

I don't have a whole lot to say here, it's just a good collection of the best parts of the Final Fantasy games!

STATUS QUO STREAM- TALES FROM THE BORDERLANDS EP. 5

Probably the best Telltale Game and the best Borderlands game?

I might have liked Ep. 4 a tad more, but this ties a nice little bow on everything.

Status Quo Uh... Sunday?

Sorry for missing last week. It was a combination of not getting enough sleep (I'm writing this ona day I woke up at 1 PM) and having too much to write. Self care! Who knew?

SUPERCON RECAP!

A VERY good weekend! I played two kick ass shows, sold some merch, and met some awesome people!

I spent a lot of time at my booth, because they were kind enough to give me one, so I didn't do a lot of wandering around, save for a couple panels my friends were running.

A couple highlights:
-Florida Supercon Championship Wrestling
Man, was this a treat! Much better than the show at Ultracon, since the crowd was way more hype for it, and the costumes themselves looked a lot better.
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/mYDYPyjWq88/maxresdefault.jpg

Also, the abundance of pro wrestling guests, like Teddy Long, Leva Bates, and Stud Magnum gave the event a lot more of a push.

-My Two Shows
Well, duh. Obviously. Saturday was right before the Cosplay Competition and drew a really good crowd, and Sunday, while smaller, still had a lot of great energy. Kudos to the sound crew, and apologies to whoever had to clean up.

JAM OF THE WEEK: "Tie Your Mother Down" by Queen

This song I heard on the Guitar Hero Live main setlist, as part of the "Classic Rock" band's campaign. GHL's campaign is a solid experience, and the classic rock tracks feel like a nice endcap to all the modern rock. Seriously, that level has the only songs made before 2001.

It's a Queen song, so obviously it rules, but a lot of people forget that Queen made this kind of bluesy rock music as well. Not doubting their big piano heavy ballads like "Somebody To Love" and "Bohemian Rhapsody", it's that those are so good, it's like finding a feature in a game you love to pieces and going "SHIT, I CAN DO THIS THE WHOLE TIME?"

MOMOCON!

I'M PLAYING THERE!

This is my first out of state con, and I'm super psyched. Curretnly, I'm slated for Friday afternoon, but I'll more details on this next week, as I'm still trying to plan a lot of stuff out.

Going to Atlanta is a HUGE opportunity for me, but it's also a big expense. If you want to help out, please consider getting something from my Bandcamp!

COMPILATION ALBUM

Speaking of Bandcamp, I'm considering putting together an album of all my fandom related songs. While Status Quo Radio was inspired by TF2, and I sell it as such, it's not as immediately recognizable as all the other songs I usually play live.

The closest thing I've seen to this is what Mega Ran called a "Road Mix". It's a great concept, since it's all the songs people know, without having the pressure of a PROPER ALBUM or the legacy of a GREATEST HITS.

On this, I'll probably have a couple of my Magic The Gathering songs, the more obviously referential songs off Status Quo Radio, and some of the others you hear at every RB show. I plan on having it ready for MomoCon, and I'll post some more details on that next update.

I am going to be releasing a newsletter that all this stuff in greater detail, so sign up, and you'll be able to give me some input!
