Status Quo Tik Toks The Year Away

Uh.... Hey all, Scott- I mean, Rhythm Bastard here!

At least I've been busy!

ANIME IWAI RECAP

May be an image of 1 person, playing a musical instrument and standing
2018 was the last Anime Iwai I had an event every day, and it gives the downtime some kind of purpose when you have an event either later in the day, or just finished something. Most importantly, it gives me a guide to recapping the weekend that is both self-centered AND well-organized!

Friday, I had my concert, and while I'm loving my new setup with a tablet to control my backing tracks, I'm still getting used to it. Downside was that it was earlier on Friday, and when people are in line for 2+ hours for a local convention, people arriving on time end up being late. The smartest cons usually print out their badges beforehand, so that guests can come and pick it up later.

My acoustic song that set was "What's Up?" by 4 Non Blondes, from the trailer to Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City, which released two weeks later, which ended up being a rushed mess that couldn't let me glom on to anybody. It felt like the movie was cutting between two different movies that happened to end at the same place, and left me with a sensation of "...What happened, there HAD to have been more..."

May be an image of 5 people and people standing

Saturday was the HCNCW Live event, Iwai-vor Series, with the winner getting to be in HCNCW canon, because we couldn't get a toy belt in time. Still, I forgot how INTO these games people can get. The crowd was going nuts every match for a 20+ year old Nintendo 64 Wrestling game, and there were no "well, i guess..." entrants. The final match was ALL women, and the winner ended up being Kayla of the 3000 Brigade!

Since she didn't know much about the game or wrestling, what we did instead was have a Kayla Canonization Match, where 8 characters she played throughout the span of the show fought in a Battle Royale match, which, even though she didn't know anything about wrestling, still had a fun time commentating with us!

I also finished my Thrash head, with his hair included! It was supposed to be a mohawk, but it ended somewhere between punk, greaser and scene, which yeah, it works!

Sunday was the Cosplay runway event, and I ALMOST didn't participate, but uh, we'll save that for the next section.

I went as Meowscles from Fortnite and despite not winning, I was clearly a fan favorite.

GOING VIRAL

So I'm on TikTok now, because at the aforementioned Cosplay Runway event, someone uploaded video of me flexing and put it on there, so now I'm like "WELL, I GUESS I'LL DO THIS THING". Still, the thirst got me through a VERY rough move.

OTAKUFEST

I'm playing Otakufest the weekend of Jan 15th and 16th! I've never been, but it looks like there's a lot of big guests and it's at the MACC, which it's been almost a couple years for me now, so I'm psyched to play again! AND only the weekend after...

MAGFEST!

Sadly, I'm not performing (yet), I'm going to be on staff. It was an opportunity I HAD to take to see everyone! I will also have a couple test burns of Hardcore Nerdcore Punk Rock on me, since that's nearing completion, but you'll be hearing about that VERY SOON.

I am helping with the Rock Band stage, so come by and say...

JAM OF THE WEEK: "Hello, Hello" by Trixie Mattel

I get the feeling that it's been so far between these things that I forget what I've talked about and how I've fallen down the RuPaul's Drag Race rabbit hole.

Anyway this is a song from Season 7 competitor, and All Stars 3 winner Trixie Mattel. I was linked her cover of Lana Del Ray's "Video Games" from my old partner, and she really turned it out. The arrangement felt lonelier and desperate than the original even though it had extra instrumentation and more going on. When you listen to her more country leaning work, it's clear there's this air of longing and desperation in her songs, which I WANT out of country music. When I think of country, I think of sparse, beautiful landscapes with no other human being around, and these people telling you a story that you

It's refreshing, but scary at the same time.

"Hello, Hello" is a mid-2000s alt rock jam, aka the kind of stuff I was learning to play when I started guitar, and it's just fun.

Status Quo Sunday Catching Up With Cons

Yup, one of these again! You'd THINK I'd learn to be more on top of these, huh?

Welp, let's start from the beginning...

MEGAPLEX!

First off, credit to Wolico/ToxicFreakHound for the promo picture:

Image

Because the show was VERY late, I needed something to hand out. It was still a fun time, and I was able to collapse in my VERY nice hotel room. Considering this is my second time around, I saw more familiar faces and tried to know more people beforehand via Telegram chats and the like, and hey, turns out a lot of furries are nice people!

I also got paid to play a party, so that's on the table for future cons!

Still maintain that Megaplex has the best solution for the artist alley: $10, 4 hour shifts, first come first serves. It's a great way for artists to get their foot in the door since it's not a lot to set up, and you're not wasting a lot of time and money if you're too new to really sell well. Though finally having Swoletariat tanks for sale also helped.

Telegram was ALSO a good place to learn how to take on a certain project, namely...

Image

Making a Thrash Panda head! At this point it was very rough, I didn't even have a back, but getting it to this point was a work in and of itself. I'll make a video highlighting the process, but it was so satisfying to get to at least here. I really felt I leveled up during this project because I learned how to work with foam, work with leather and work with fur, and at the end, I had a head I can wear.

MIZUCON!

Primetime show, baby! Also had BastardMania for sale on CD!

This show had another thing that I'll never go back from: BLUETOOTH. P A SYSTEM. Made the show much easier to work with. Mizucon's staff was also very on top of things and VERY helpful with the show. I'm eager to see what they come up with next year when we have more elbow room.

Also saw the premiere of Thrash Panda Mark II

ANIME IWAI SHOW!

2:30 on Friday, in Main Events

Hope to see you all there!

I'm also booking for room parties if anyone is interested, provided you let me carry a backpack o' merch!

NEW MERCH! SWOLETARIAT TANKS AND BASTARDMANIA CD!

Join The Swoletariat Tank Top main photo

New for fall! These have been selling very well, and it's great to have this stuff upfront, in person, since people always walk away happy. You can't ALWAYS rely on people to remember to check out your Bandcamp or Threadless page.

FUTURE STUFF?

I've been juggling around some projects, and one of them is a visual novel that will go out to my patrons first, then I'll post up on itch.io, akin to many other VNs, like The Echo Project

Still don't know how I'll peter it out to the levels of Patron, maybe
$1 - Build of the game
$5 - Soundtrack
$20 - Script

But all that's up in the air, and I'm adding these VN updates in rotation with original music and covers, so it will be sporadic.

Status Quo Sunday Is Anticipating Release

RETROMANIA WRESTLING NOW HAS A RELEASE DATE: FEBRUARY 26TH!

I've been bragging to EVERYONE I know about this game, and they all ask the same question: "When is it coming out?"

February 26th.

I know it seems like a long way off, but I'm getting more and more involved with the process, so at least we know the game part is going to be solid. Retromania is a passion project of one man, and he wants the game to be 100% his, which I get. While the game is coming out later in a year with more competitors (possibly), it also means it's more likely to stand out, with pick-up-and-play arcde gameplay, and music by Mega Ran and myself. Three months is more time to grant this project more possibilities, and I'm honored to be a part of it!

ANIME IWAI HAPPENED!

Last Saturday, on the 14th, Anime Iwai had an event highlight various streamers in the community, and also showing off a couple planned shows. One of which being our Digital 3000 Brigade show. A lot of it is highlight footage, and videos from Taste Of Dragons, a gaming podcast featuring some 3KB members

However, there were a couple original bits, including a couple sketches that were written by me. It was freeing to have a lot of us really delve into a particular niche we're interested in and find the humor in that. Some people even got the Resident Evil Outbreak references we made!

Later that Saturday was a stream of Mario Party 2 I did with some friends, and that worked surprisingly well. I think next "end of month" stream should be something like that with Patrons, with ones at the $5 tier being the top priority.

NEW MUSIC: "FIRST DAY OF SPRING"

This track is familiar to my Patrons, but I released in on Bandcamp, because why not? Kudos to Marlent from the 3KB for doing the makeup and taking the pictures because she KILLED it! She did the makeup for our "The Whole Being Dead Thing" sketch from our digital 3KB show!

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/346109650975850496/772183332766089226/FB_IMG_1604173166542.jpg

The cover art is an homage to David Bowie's "Heroes" cover, who I was trying to channel while writing this song, along side other new ave acts like The Cure and Joy Division.

Primarily, my inspiration for this was the webcomic Lore Olympus, which is a melodramatic retelling of the Greek myth of Hades and Persephone. It has a very nice art style and a bouncy sense of humor. When I first discovered it, I binged it in a course of 2 nights!

JAM OF THE WEEK: "Touch-Tone Telephone" by Lemon Demon

Neil Cicierega has done SO. GODDAMN. MUCH. Potter Puppet Pals, his Mouth series, Ultimate Showdown, BrodyQuest, THE LIST GOES ON.

This is with his original project, Lemon Demon, and its most recent album, Spirit Phone from 2016.

Goddamn this is one bouncy number. Especially considering the intro and outros are acapella, which I sure as fuck can't do. However, what I like the most about is the unconventional delivery. It gives the intention behind these absolutly weird lines room to breathe, and from these disconnected bit you can see a bigger picture. I actually found out about this via Adler The Eagle, who's been streaming Roller Coaster Tycoon on his Youtube.

Status Quo Sunday Is Revving Up Again

IT'S BEEN A COUPLE MONTHS

Honestly, it's been a rough couple months, with my day job throwing me for loops on top of loops with a very irregular schedule, I'm never 100% where I'm going to be the next day, so it's hard to get a consistent schedule going.

Every time I wanted to do anything, my body just needed sleep so bad and it kept perpetuating this cycle of staying up late to catch up on lost time and sleeping in late to catch up on sleep

ANY CONS COMING UP?

Mizucon, Lumi-Con and Anime Iwai have all cancelled their conventions for 2020.

I, like many of you, am disappointed in the cancellation, but they made the right decision, especially since Florida's governor and the rest of his administration is making a bad problem worse by putting profits over people.

There's a lot that's still up in the air right now, but I'll let you all know what's going on the second I am able to.

As far as what CAN be done, Megaplex and Anime Iwai are doing online events, and I'll let you know about any upcoming concerts.

The 3000 Brigade show WILL happen in a different format

In the meantime, I CAN promise you more Twitch concerts and stuff on YouTube, but again, anything comes my way, I'll let you all know.

AFO is still on the table, and Holiday Matsuri is still up in the air but WHO KNOWS?

Image may contain: text that says 'U WE'LL SEE YOU IN 2021 Mizucon'
Image may contain: text that says 'Anime lwai wants everyone to stay safe and healthy for when we all meet again! We'll see you in 2021! A nime wai'

RETROMANIA WRESTLING? STILL DOING MUSIC FOR IT!
In fact, you can hear my music in a recent video!

JAM OF THE WEEK: "A Good Look" by Sturgill Simpson

Country music gets real fucking good when you leave the Radio Stations.

This is "A Good Look" from Sturgill Simpson's most recent project "Sound and Fury". It's an album that has a short animated film attached and this is one of the song segments. Everything I've heard is emotional whiplash from one track to the next.

"A Good Look" has its feet very firmly planted in funk, and your feet are moving through out the whole thing. The bass work on the track is solid, and provides a solid groove while every other instrument does its own thing. The guitars screech enough to get your attention, but the licks never overstay their welcome, and the synthpop elements here are used to great effect.

DEFINITELY looking at more Sturgill Simpson in the future!

I have yet to see the full thing because I want to be context free as possible, but I 100% respect the concept of it being concieved as both an album and short film simultaneously, ala 5555.

The New Hotness In 2020

Yeah, so for future reference, anytime I do something new, I'm going to make a quick post about it.

NEW SINGLE! "I Want To Fuck Krampus For Christmas"

A song about love on Christmas. Krampus is the new hotness on the holiday season, baby! I was going to do this on the guitar, but when I got into Reaper, and played around with the synth, it sounded REALLY GOOD!

Artwork done by Jesse Davis

NEW VIDEO! "The Average Rhythm Bastard Live Experience 3(KB) (Anime Iwai)"

Part of my "Resolutions" for 2020 is to make a proper Sizzle Reel for my live shows to show off to potential cons and venues, but this had so many good moments and was such a good feeling to have all my friends from 3000 Brigade support me!

NEW EPISODE OF RPG PALS CLUB!
Episode 24: Look At Me, I'm A Jerk!

The City of Waterdeep has seen bands with grudges before, but has it seen one with a grudge that is out for revenge against a friend slash teammate? Also, Nivenya goes into a hole.

Our cleric gets very pupset, and Oi is a jerk to robots.

Another very obvious Aquabats reference:

Catching Up Before The End Of The Decade

Hahaha, it's been a while...

NEW SONG ON PATREON: "Remember"
This is a song that I've had kicking around for a while, ever since I finished listening to the podcast
The Weezer Bracket. It was a podcast that, March Madness style in Song Vs. Song matchups, set
out to determine the Worst Weezer Song (spoiler: It was "Beverley Hills").

In the process, I've learned a couple things:
1. They have A LOT of songs that are "We're going back to our roots! We don't suck anymore, we promise!"
2. Rivers Cuomo has A LOT of weird song writing strategies.
Most fun: Adderall, tequila, and a nap on a hammock.
Least fun: A notebook full of chord progressions he refers to like a textbook.

From all of this, I kept getting the impression that Rivers Cuomo, after being embarassed by Pinkerton, got kind of... desperate for approval. One day at work, I saw that there's a special "Weezer Island" on Fortnite, and I went "HOLE- EEE SHIIIIIT"

Little by little, the song came to me.

NEW SONG ON YOUTUBE: "Mercedes Merced"

Last week, the trailer for Black Widow dropped, and while I haven't been keeping up with the Marvel movies, I have kept my eye on this one, since one of the villains is rumored to be Taskmaster.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/7c/Cover_of_Avengers-196.jpg/250px-Cover_of_Avengers-196.jpg

Taskmaster, as I've mentioned before, is one of my FAVORITE comic characters. His power, photographic reflexes, allow him to copy any movement he sees and replicate them perfectly; whether it's fighting like Iron Fist, shooting arrows like Hawkeye, or throwing his replica sheild like Captain America. He's a mercenary scumbag, but the fun kind of scumbag, where he'll interupt a villain's speech about their goals or whatever, and Tasky will be like "Don't care. Fuck you. Pay me". I love his dumb skeleton pirate costume, as well as his Tacticool Luchador from Udon, which I actually cosplayed as!

 https://66.media.tumblr.com/dfe58ffad5aa8fce9071ccb0810741df/tumblr_pl7k6vM05a1twdz6wo1_400.png

He's been explored in a variety of ways throughout the years, and the song Mercedes Merced, was inspired by his 2011 limited series, "Unthinkable". Mercedes Merced is actually Taskmaster's wife, who he forgot about over the years, as his in order to use his powers and commit it to muscle memory, his brain "forgets" an explicit memory, and the series chronicles him reconnecting with his wife, then later forgetting her again to save his life. It's a really bittersweet tale, and I recommend it immensely.

https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/marvelcomicsfanon/images/b/b8/Mer.jpeg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/340?cb=20190618154940

So for this song, I made it about a relationship you half remember but it ended up being way more important than you were led to believe.

HEY RHYTHM BASTARD, HOW DOES HE LOOK IN THE MOVIE?

https://www.nme.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/EK2npijXYAARkDt-696x442.jpeg

uhhhh... WHO WANTS TO HEAR ABOUT SOME CONVENTIONS?

ANIME IWAI RECAP!
FRIDAY!
-Iwaivor Series 2019!
We crowned a champion after a lot of fighting and a lot of promo cutting. We're slowly, but surely getting a grip on how to run future events efficiently. Namely, people REALLY aren't prepared to cut promos!

Also, as we get more popular, we're going to get more crowded, and we don't want to turn anyone away, so we'll just be doing 4-man Royal Rumble Heats until we get down to Two Finalists.

-My Concert!
Went swimmingly! It was my last concert of year, and my friends at the 3KB made sure it went over big and got HYPE AS FUCK!

-3000 Brigade Show!
Maybe it's because this is my 3rd show, maybe it's because I had so many costume changes, or maybe it was just that we were super confident in our show, but this year flew by.

First I was a Herald for the Fort Knights from Fortnite, then I was Johnny Cage from Mortal Kombat, then Shitty Drag, then Green Link, and then Johnny Cage again. Then I went shirtless and the crowd went wild.

Image may contain: 3 people, people smiling, people standing, people dancing and indoor

-Also, I attended a "Fursona" panel, and this is the artist's interpretation of the "Thrash Panda" protag:

PAX UNPLUGGED RECAP!
I LOVED PAX Unplugged this year! I sold a shit ton of MtG cards and got to play some new games.

Honestly, my favorite part of PAX Unplugged is the city of Philadelphia. My friend Owen's a local, and took me out to all the cool food places. I got a Wawa's, I got a proper Cheesesteak, I ate scrapple at the Reading Terminal Market, all those boxes were checked off.

Image result for Jeleva

As for actually playing games, I played a round of Commander for the first time in a while, and my group couldn't have been nicer. I only had the Mind Sieze Precon from 2013, but it provided me with a nice enough base to build on, and I've been building a couple decks back here at home, with a third commander deck on the way. Oops...

Raccoon Tycoon Title

A game I tried and ended up buying was Raccoon Tycoon. It's a game about producing resources, selling them for profit, and buying property to help you on your way. You get into a good pace once you get going, and it is straightforward after a couple of rounds. It's got a nice, old world style, and even though raccoons are scavengers, not capitalists, it was worth picking up for $40.

Pat Baer, who helps run League of Heels, the PAX Wrestling Federation, also runs a lot of fun comedy panels, one of which is the Improvised Postmortem, where you make a game concept and make a postmortem on it on the fly from just a title. Loading Ready Run talent, and lots of other familiar faces are there, and did a great job!

JAM OF THE WEEK: "The Passenger" by Siouxie and the Banshees

Recently I checked out the series "Infinity Train" because the second season was advertise with a trailer that has this cover of Iggy Pop's "The Passenger". The Iggy Pop version was also used in the trailer for The Outer Worlds.

Outer Worlds rules, Infinity Train rules, this cover rules, and this was also in the credits for "I, Tonya" which I didn't mind, so if you want me to check out your thing, put "The Passenger" in the trailer.

JAM OF THE WEEK: "Juice" by Lizzo

HOW HAVE I NOT TALKED ABOUT HER BEFORE?

oh yeah, because I'm lazy as fuuuuuuck.

ANYWAY, in what looks a strong contender for "Best Song/Best Top 40 Song", we have Lizzo with "Juice". This is a such a fun song, with bouncy delivery of ridiculous lyrics ("Boy I'm not a snack at all/Look baby, I'm the whole damn meal", "I be drippin' so much sauce/Got a bih looking like Ragu"), backed to some sweet, sweet, funk guitar.

I wanted to talk about this song WAAAY sooner, because when I was tipped off to the song's existence, I loved it on the first listen. Every sound and beat is like dopamine and Lizzo's vocals are so confident and full of self love, it's impossible not to smile. However, it was featured as part of the 3000 Brigade Preview Show at Mini Iwai, so it had to be our little secret.

Also liking her other singles "Truth Hurts" and "Good As Hell", which are just wonderful pick me ups.

Status Quo A Lot Of Shit Hasn't Been Confirmed Yet So Here's What I've Been Into Recently

Now, here's the thing about my silence: It's not that I HAVEN'T been working, it's that what I've been working on either:

  • can't be talked about (legally)
  • can't be talked about because it isn't done
  • can't be talked about because it isn't confirmed.

So, here's some stuff I CAN tell you:

RETROMANIA

Not much to say YET, but if you're a fan of old wrestling games, you might want to check this out.

I got to do a song for it! That is the most I can comfortably say I'm involved with it, AND THAT'S GONNA BE A RUNNING THEME.

CONS

I was at Mizucon in May, and it had a REALLY good comeback! The hotel they used is beautiful, there were a lot of people there, and my panel, Mizu-Mania II (Under New Management)! had a full house!

Also, I invested in a new type of goodie: BADGE RIBBONS!

HOW CAN I GET ONE?  YOU ASK:

1. Buy at least $5 in merch at my table

2. Return 25 MTG Cards that I threw out into the audience

My next cons are Mini Iwai (with the 3000 Brigade) and Megaplex. WHO KNOWS WHAT ELSE?

JAM OF THE WEEK: "Godzilla" by Bear McCreary feat. Serj Tankaran

The intro makes it sound like they're either announcing the coming of a God or at least erecting a big-ass statue of them lest they have their thatched roof cottages burninated. Serj Tankaran has a unique, operatic voice and it suits the song well, since it takes a more "HERE COMES THE FUCKING APOCALYPSE" take on the still great Blue Oyster Cult originial.

Some of the production in the way certain notes hit makes me feel this was produced to make it seem more "trailer friendly". For another example of this, see Gary Clarke Jr.'s version of "Come Together" for the movie Justice League, and how some of those guitars sound like the Inception BWAAAAA.

Still great workout fodder. Moreso than the original.

SINCE IT'S E3: THE BEST E3 PRESENTATION EVER

If you want to see a bit evolve over the course of 25+ minutes, watch this.

All I want to say is: Fuck The J-Haters.

WHAT I'VE BEEN OBSESSED WITH: SONIC 2006 REAL TIME FANDUB

First, nice Marching Band cover of Ke$ha's "Die Young". Second, nice Zebrahead cover.

This is an example of just throwing shit out there, and seeing what people latch on to. It's over an hour, but surprisingly consistent in all the bullshit it makes up.

VERY BELATED ANIME IWAI ORBIT RECAP!

ANIME IWAI RECAP! FRIDAY!

That was a looooooooooong weekend. Really busy, but really fun!

First off, these were the belts we were giving away to the champs:
Image may contain: Eric OfGiovanni, standing
I know, we felt bad about giving them away!

These were made with the assistance of Zach and Marlent from the 3000 Brigade and they came out fantastic. The plates are galvanized steel and the belts themselves are faux leather.

Since I wasn't sure what kind of time we'd have, all tie brakers would be settled by the game Smack Talk Showdown.
Basically, it's FunEmployed for cutting wrestling promos. So after 5 minutes, if no winner was declared, they'd face off and the best promo wins.

Our winning team, Team Frozen Grape, comprised of Mineta from My Hero Academia and Inuyasha, won handily with a 3 Count pinfall.

After that was one last dress rehearsal, and then on to Saturday, the LOOOOOONGEST day of the con.

ANIME IWAI RECAP! SATURDAY!

HOOO! Where to begin?

Oh yeah, at the start of the day with the My Hero Academia Sports and Games Festival!

Here I am, cosplaying as Tenya Iida, or the protagonist from a 1970s Sci-Fi movie.

This was a thing I got involved when I found out who I was going to be playing in the 3000 Brigade Show back in May and wanted to reuse some of my Iida cosplay stuff. It was a simple affair, there was a cast cosplayers already dressed as MHA charachters to some games, some the audience would get involved in, all in all, more fun than I was expecting, and I got some eyeballs on to the 3000 Brigade show.

From there, I had to rush to Snatch Game 3000, which is basically the Match Game, but with 3000 Brigade people dressed up as various characters.

I was a Team Rocket Grunt! I have a Pikachu just for the occasion, but I didn't get to my car to bring it!

Then nothing for like 5 hours.

THEN THE 3000 BRIGADE SHOW!

here's some pics, try to guess what the show is about (images courtesy of Nerds Know)

It was a great show, and like always, it's been an honor to work with these talented, sexy assholes.

In this show, I was a member of B12, Chris Redfield (Particularly his RE5 incarnation) and Tenya Iida from My Hero Academia.

These costumes were a lot easier than I though initially.

For Chirs's shirt, I had a jersey the same color, and simply had to paint the sides black. A friend was able to provide most of the accessories, like the belt, holster, and gun, and I bought the rest. Also, I made the pattern for the sleeves.

Tenya Iida's school jacket was actually REALLY simple: I got a gray suit jacket at Goodwill, and the blue parts are just bias tape that's been Liquid Stitched on.

After that was a meet and greet, and then I was done FOR NOW...

ANIME IWAI SHOW RECAP! SUNDAY!

My show can be summed up as such: Sound was bad, crowd was terrific.

No shots for that yet...
